Minutes from 9-18-01were approved.

Judy Williston reported approval of the Master of Arts in Mathematics, Concentration in Mathematics Education.  Dr. Williston reviewed the procedure for reviewing proposals coming before the committee.  Notebooks with proposals, checksheets, and deadline dates will be available in Merri McClure’s office and in Carolyn Finch's office.  Approval will be by majority vote.

Tom McDole and Phillip Cardon presented an overview of the revised Master of Science in Career, Technical and Workforce Education.  The program has been updated to reflect changes in the disciplines.  The revised program reflects an emphasis on a theoretical approach.  The department has been focused on the revision process for a year and work is based on theory and research in the discipline.

Carolyn Finch presented a handout/template designed to provide direction in preparing the conceptual framework for NCATE.  Dr. Finch checked the committee's understanding that each advanced program will develop a conceptual framework.  Areas emphasized included looking at current goals and national and state standards for programs.  Literature searches can begin through looking at current courses and sorting recent (last 5 years) references to support goals.  Narratives will need to cite these references.  Developing assessments will be an important focus.

Questions for Dr. Finch included defining what is the "unit" for NCATE.  Departments can organize the work using existing curriculum committees.  Program coordinators can assist with identifying those who can most effectively contribute.  Advisory committees that include professionals in the field are a good idea for input.  It is not required that the NCATE headings be used, however these will be the headings that the program will be correlated to.

Ron Williamson presented NCATE materials from the University of North Carolina Greensboro.  UNCG used a whole unit approach to the conceptual framework.

Members are asked to bring any work in progress to the next meeting for discussion.

The next meeting will be Tuesday, November 6 at 3:30.

Respectfully Submitted        Sue Stickel, Secretary
