College of Education Committee on Basic Programs

Composition

1. Student representatives. The EMU Association of Prospective Teachers shall designate, by a method of the organization's choosing, one (1) student who is initially preparing to become either (a) an early childhood teacher or (b) elementary teacher and one (1) student who is initially preparing to become any of (a) a secondary teacher, (b) a K-12 teacher, or (c ) a special education teacher to serve as voting members of the Committee on Basic Programs. The name of the student(s) selected shall be reported to the Dean of the College of Education, who shall report it to the College of Education Council and to the chair of the Committee on Basic Programs (CBP). In the event that the Association of Prospective Teachers does not name one or both such students by October 1, 2002 (for the 2002-2003 year) or by October 1, 2003 (for the 2003-2004 year), the Associate Dean for Academic Services shall nominate one or both students, according to the criteria above, for election to the CBP by the College of Education Council. As provided in the COE document, the student representatives shall serve a one-year term.

2. Faculty representatives. For 2002-2004, the CBP shall consist of 20 faculty representatives, as follows: (see the Dean of the College of Education for the calculations used to derive these numbers of representatives)

A. Six (6) representatives elected by the Department of Teacher Education. The Head of the Department of Teacher Education shall report to the Dean of the College of Education the persons so elected.

B. Four (4) representatives elected from and by the full and part-time faculty who are scheduled to supervise student teachers during any part of 2002-2004. The election shall be organized by the Associate Dean for Academic Services, who shall report to the Dean of the College of Education the persons so selected.

C. Two (2) representatives elected by the Department of Special Education. The Head of the Department of Special Education shall report to the Dean of the College of Education the persons so elected.

D. One (1) representative elected by the Department of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance. The Head of the Department of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance shall report to the Dean of the College of Education the person so elected.

E. One (1) representative elected by the College of Technology. The Dean of the College of Technology shall report to the Dean of the College of Education the person so elected.

F. One (1) representative elected by the Department of Art. The Head of the Department of Art shall report to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and the Dean of the College of Education the person so elected.

G. One (1) representative elected by the Department of English Language & Literature. The Head of the Department of English Language and Literature shall report to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and the Dean of the College of Education the person so elected.

H. One (1) representative elected by the Department of Mathematics. The Head of the Department of Mathematics shall report to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and the Dean of the College of Education the person so elected.

I. One (1) representative for (collectively) the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geography & Geology, and Physics & Astronomy, who shall be elected by a process determined by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, who shall report to the Dean of the College of Education the person so elected.

J. One (1) representative for (collectively) the Departments of Communication and Theatre Arts, Foreign Language & Bilingual Studies, and Music, who shall be elected by a process determined by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, who shall report to the Dean of the College of Education the person so elected.

K. One (1) representative for (collectively) the Departments of History & Philosophy, Political Science, Sociology/Anthropology/Criminology, Economics, and Psychology, who shall be elected by a process determined by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, who shall report to the Dean of the College of Education the person so elected.

Procedures

If a representative resigns from the committee or leaves the university in mid-term, the person selected as a replacement shall serve the remainder of the original term, rather than for a full two-year period.

A quorum shall consist of one more than half the number of voting representatives.
