Next meeting September 22--
If the General Education requirements are reduced by seven hours and the SOFD 328 is implemented, the EMU Elementary Education programs will range from 126-131 hours. If the recommendations below are implemented all programs will be at or below the 128 hour expectation.
1. Eliminate
TEDU 253 from the professional studies requirements and ensure MI-DOE
competency requirements are met in other courses. The content of this course is
not required for the preparation of elementary teachers, and there are no
questions on the state exam in this area.
2. The
COE should prepare a request to the GERC to allow LITR 207 (children’s
literature) to meet the general education requirements for a literature course.
In LITR 207 students study
children's literature that includes classic and contemporary fiction and
nonfiction, poetry, folklore, and mythology. The course focuses on these works
as literature rather than on lesson planning or other pedagogy. As such we
believe that it may be appropriate for LITR 207 to be counted in the same
category as other introductory literature courses that focus on prose, poetry,
or mythology.
3. Integrate
the Physical Education and Health Education methods classes to form one course,
and ensure MI-DOE competencies continue to be delivered.
4. Change
the credit hours in the arts from eight credits to six credits. Since MI-DOE requires knowledge in music,
art, and drama, students could chose two of the three. A perhaps better
solution would be for the Art faculty to develop integrated courses that
covered the competencies required.
