3. Reports of Committees

A. Reports from Standing Committees

                                      i. Basic Programs Committee.

(a) Recommended revisions in program for teachers in Japanese Language and Culture.  Reduces Acontent@ from 38 to 30 hours.  Brings professional ed sequence into line with other foreign language and secondary programs.  State standards for this field may be found at  http://www.michigan.gov/documents/flstandards_23235_7.doc

(b) Recommended (with comment) revisions.  The current secondary Ageneral science@ major expires such that we can admit no more students to it.  It has been replaced at the state level by AIntegrated Science (DI).@  The ADI@ program can be constructed in either of two ways: a 36-hour group major with a minor or a 50-hour major with a certain distribution of courses and no minor.  The present proposal is for the latter.  It includes 14 hours of life science, 12 hours of chemistry, 8 hours of physics, 7 hours of astronomy, 11 hours of earth science, 4-5 hours of mathematics, and a special methods course (one of BIOL 403, PHY 325, ESSC 347).  This totals 59-60 hours.  However, if the student selects ESSC 347, the program is six hours longer.

Comments: (from the Basic Programs Committee) ACommittee had concerns about the size of the program and whether post-bac students would find this an attractive option.  (from Jerry Robbins) Given the recent report to the Provost from a Task Force on program length, I don=t feel comfortable approving, even if COE Council does recommend, a program of this length.  State standards for secondary Aintegrated science@ are at http://www.michigan.gov/documents/Integrated_Science_Secondary_Standards_5_03_65848_7.doc

( c) Proposed new ASTR 311 Astronomy Projects for Elementary Teachers.  AA hands-on course designed to provide elementary teachers with experience doing projects, in the elementary classroom, to teach astronomy.  The course will integrate grade-level appropriate mathematics and writing to investigate and solve astronomical problems.  Students also will study human endeavors in space exploration and their impact on societal and technological issues.@  (The intended audience for this course, other than Aelementary teachers@ is unclear.  Requirement?  Elective?)

(d) Proposed new PHY 312 Electricity Experiments for Elementary Teachers.  AA practical course designed to help elementary teachers learn the basics of electricity and electrical safety.  Students will use grade-level appropriate mathematics, equipment and measurement devices to investigate simple circuits.  Electrical energy production, use, and conservation will be discussed with reference to U.S. consumers in a global context.@ (The intended audience for this course, other than Aelementary teachers@ is unclear.  Requirement?  Elective?)

                             ii. Advanced Programs Committee

No report.

iii. Professional and Affiliated Programs Committee

Recommends approval of:

(a) proposed new M.S. in Bioinformatics.  34-35 hours: Bioinformatics I & II, Genome Analysis, Recombinant DNA Technologies, one of two computer science courses, Statistical Concepts and Methods for Bioinformatics, Modeling in Bioinformatics, three management courses, a seminar, and an internship.

Proposal includes

Revision of BIOL 401 Genome Analysis

10 new coursesB2 in Biology, 2 in Computer Science, 2 in Mathematics, one in management, and two in ACAS.@

Additional information will be available at the meeting.

(b) Proposed revisions in minor in Children=s Literature.  In the first of two long lists of courses, the 200-level courses have been deleted and students are to Achose one.@  The second long list of courses has been divided.  One of the divisions includes three 200-level courses, not including LITR 210, which has been deleted, of which students are to Achose one.@ The other of the divisions includes upper level courses, plus LITR 251.  Additional information will be available at the meeting.

( c) Proposed new course MGT 457 The Merlanti Seminar.  The Merlanti Seminar seeks to provide future business leaders (in part through case studies and mentoring from practitioners) with the advanced knowledge and business skills needed to identify, analyze and resolve pressing contemporary issues in corporate social responsibility and ethics.

(d) Proposed new course INDT 505 Patents and Patenting.  Elementary patent law, efficient methods of reviewing patents, careers in the patenting arena, and learning technology from patent publications are discussed and illustrated.  Technical writing skills for drafting patent applications and for partnering with patent attorneys in prosecuting patent applications are developed in homework and in-class workshop exercises.
