S.  Dean=s report

Problem programs; again; still.

8.  Old business

Actions tabled at the previous meeting:

(a) Recommended revisions in program for teachersinJapanese Language and Culture.  ReducesAcontent@from 38 to 30 hours. Bringsprofessional ed sequence into line with other foreign languageandsecondary programs.  State standardsforthis field may be found at  http://www.michigan.gov/documents/flstandards_23235_7.doc

(b) Recommended (with comment) revisions.  The current secondary Ageneral science@ major expires such that wecanadmit no more students to it.  Ithasbeen replaced at the state level by AIntegrated Science (DI).@  The ADI@ program can be constructedineither of two ways: a 36-hour group major with a minor or a 50-hour majorwitha certain distribution of courses and no minor. The present proposal is forthe latter. It includes 14 hours of life science, 12 hours of chemistry, 8hours ofphysics, 7 hours of astronomy, 11 hours of earth science, 4-5 hoursofmathematics, and a special methods course (one of BIOL 403, PHY 325,ESSC347).  This totals 59-60 hours.  However, if the student selects ESSC 347,theprogram is six hours longer.

Comments: (from the Basic Programs Committee) ACommittee had concerns about the size of the programandwhether post-bac students would find this an attractive option.@  (from JerryRobbins) Given the recent report to the Provostfrom a Task Force on programlength, I don=t feel comfortable approving, evenif COE Council does recommend, a program of this length.  State standards for secondary Aintegrated science@ are at http://www.michigan.gov/documents/Integrated_Science_Secondary_Standards_5_03_65848_7.doc

(a) an analysis (usually theState or SPA Standards grid,or relevant portion thereof) of how the new orrevised program meets theapplicable state or national standards; and

(b-1) (fornew programs) a statement of the minimum totalnumber of hours necessary tocomplete the entire degree program, or

(b-2) (forprogram revisions) item (b-1) for the presentprogram and a statement of theeffect of the proposed revisions on the totallength of the program.

(For (b-1), it is recommended that a listbeprovided of all courses required for degree requirements, grouped bygeneraleducation, by major, by minor, by professional education sequence, withnotations of those courses that are being used to satisfy multiplerequirements[Adouble dipping@].)
