MINUTES OF MEETING
Attendance: M. Kinney-Sedgwick (TED), D. Anderson (LC), R. Martusewicz (TED), P. Smith (SPED), S. Ginsberg (SPED), D. Choudhuri (LC), V.C. Polite (COE), M. Bretting (COE), G. Harder (COE), D. Bennion (TED).
- Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 2:05 pm by M. Kinney-Sedgwick with the establishment of a quorum.
- Approval of the minutes of September 28, 2005: The minutes of the meeting were approved. One change was announced – the reception for Susan Rinke will take place on October 27, at 4:00 p.m. in Cady’s (M. Bretting).

- Porter Building status – The Marilyn Lake Memorial Garden will be relocated to the east side of the South Entrance of Porter with a purpose of creating a garden space which can be used by faculty, staff, and students. Plans will be available for perusal from M. Bretting. In memoriam for Dean Rockwell’s passing, Max Obermeyer has donated money that will be used towards creating another smart classroom in Porter.

- Status of the Assessment Committee: In a good process. Rich source of data from teacher quality assessment that can be used by faculty in papers, as well as talking points around the state.
- Faculty Searches: All failed searches from last year were automatically authorized to proceed as well as four additional new searches based on retirement of faculty, leading to a total of nine faculty searches in progress at the COE (M. Bretting).
- Federal earmarks: A number of proposals will be put forward by October 16, including one in collaboration with HHS, an Academy for math, science, and technology that can take the form of a Discovery Center or a Lab School, professional development for senior teachers, establishing COE as a supplemental provider, and Men in K-12 education.
- Old business
- College of Education Committee assignments and calendars – Various committees need to turning faculty assignments and meeting schedules once they have taken place.
- Project Backpack Update: P. Boyd-Williams and compatriots are traveling and sending back reports. Perhaps there needs to be some sort of forum to process and debrief their experiences of the devastation. D. Choudhuri reported that invitations to participate in counseling support groups had been sent out to the 25 identified Gulf Coast students through the Ombudsman’s office. on the ongoing success of the project.
- New business – G. Harder gave a heads up for a State bill that has been passed that requires that all school personnel and volunteers working in the school will need to be fingerprinted and go through FBI background checks—this has implications for student teachers and other field placement activities as well as for students who desire a career in education.
