COE COUNCIL MEETING

DRAFT MINUTES

December 13, 2006

Porter Building, 301B

Attendance:   M. Kinney-Sedgwick (TED), G. Marx (LC), S. Ginsberg (SPED), D. Choudhuri (LC), P. Smith (SPED), L. Polter (SPED), R. Carpenter (TED), A. Bednar (TED), S. Quilter (COE), J. Tracy (L&C), D. Bennion (TED). Guest: P. Williams-Boyd.

I.                    Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 2:05 pm by M. Kinney-Sedgwick with the establishment of a quorum. 

II.                 Approval of the minutes for November 6, 2006 meeting.

III.               Reports of Committees

a.        Basic Programs Committee:

                                                               i.      Science Education minors. Based on NSTA requirements, science education programs must submit one common report for all programs, and the changes meet NCATE standards. Approved.

b.       Advanced Programs Committee:

                                                               i.      Master’s in Curriculum: Presentation by P. Williams-Boyd on the need, development, and requirements of the new Master’s program concentrating in Urban and Diversity Education as well as targeted towards centers in off-campus locations, for 32 hours. Approved pending approval by Advanced Programs which has not yet reviewed the program.

c.       Professional and Affiliated Programs Committee:

                                                               i.      Revision to Social Work undergraduate program. Approved.

d.      Planning and Finance Committee – No report

e.       Diversity Committee – P. Smith presented a letter approved by the COE Diversity Committee protesting the removal of language on social justice and sexual orientation from NCATE standards and demanding that  constructs should in fact be enhanced  and made essential elements. The letter was endorsed by the Council.  In addition, the Council endorsed the resolution passed buy the Teacher Education Department on the same issue.

g.       Course and Program Approvals

                                                               i.      New Courses: HIST 516. Approved.

                                                               i.      Faculty Council – No report
