Frequently Asked Questions...

How do I get my LiveText account?

Faculty should contact the LiveText team at EMU in order to get their account setup. Please contact coe.livetext@emich.edu, to get your account.

Students purchase a LiveText subscription by following the directions on the EMU Student LiveText help pages, located by clicking here, and selecting the appropriate information links.

When should I get my LiveText account?

Not all classes will be using LiveText. If your course is identified as one which will require the use of LiveText, the COE Office of Academic Services will be working with your Program Coordinator to provide you with materials in advance of your starting to use LiveText. We will also provide you with an orientation and training.

What is the plan for training faculty to use LiveText in EMU’s educator preparation program?

There are three types of training that will be available to faculty through the implementation process.

The first training sessions will focus on your role as an EVALUATOR of students’ work. You will learn how to review (i.e. make written comments on student’s work) and assess (i.e. grade and score students’ work). Faculty who teach the classes in which we have key assessments will need to know how to evaluate students’ work. Many faculty, lecturers, and adjuncts will need this training.

The second training sessions will focus on the role of CREATOR of assessments. Our first priority for LiveText is to get the key assessments up and running by Winter 2007. In order to make certain this happens, the LiveText implementation team is working with your program coordinators to get electronic versions of the assessments and load them into LiveText for you. Once this process is done for the entire professional education unit, we will time to train faculty to create their own assessments, which they can use on their own (i.e. an assessment that is used in your class but not by all faculty/students within a program area). Faculty can decide if they want to take part in this kind of training. NCATE/SPA program coordinators should take part in this training.

The third training sessions will focus on the role of REPORTER of assessments. The system allows you to write various reports given the assessment data that have been captured. This training will occur after the system is up and running. Faculty can decide if they want to take part in this kind of training. NCATE/SPA program coordinators probably should take part in this training.

Faculty training for LiveText is based on a “Just In Time” training model. That is, faculty should attend the appropriate LiveText training 2-3 weeks prior to using the LiveText system. Training that takes place 4-12 weeks prior to system usage will most likely be forgotten.

The EVALUATOR training sessions for those faculty using LiveText in Fall 2006 (i.e. FETE 201, SPGN 251, ART 317, and some secondary science methods courses), are available at http://www.emich.edu/coe/livetext/faculty/livetext-training.html. EVALUATOR training for Winter 2007 will be done in January, February, and March 2007. The schedule on the web site will be updated with more training dates as we get closer to Winter 2007.

If you are interested in getting your LiveText account now so that you can get comfortable with it, while teaching yourself, we can accommodate your request by e-mailing coe.livetext@emich.edu. There is some written documentation at http://www.emich.edu/coe/livetext/faculty/index.html and a Help menu in LiveText to train you on the LiveText system. However, formal classroom training for CREATORS and REPORTERS will not be scheduled until sometime during the Winter 2007 semester.

How do I create my LiveText account?

Faculty must contact coe.livetext@emich.edu, to get an account. Please use your EMU e-mail account, and include your EID number in your e-mail.

What are the computer requirements for using LiveText?

The requirments are fairly modest, and can be found in detail, at the LiveText web site, by clicking here. In general though, most relatively recent computers with an internet connection will work fine. LiveText recommends the use of the Firefox web browser, which is available for free, by clicking here.

How do documents and assessments get into the LiveText system for use in my course?

We have created this flowchart showing the steps involved in these first few semesters of using LiveText. If you have any questions, please contact coe.livetext@emich.edu.

Now that I have my account, what should I do next?

There's a bit of housekeeping you need to do, before you go on to doing other things. (Some of these items may have already been done for your account when it was set up, so please check, first.)

1. When logged into your account, click on the Account info label, on the left, and add any information to your account profile you wish to add. In addition, while in the Account info area, you should set your Time Zone to U.S. Eastern. Please also make sure all the information is correct. It is very important you ensure your Faculty ID and your School Email Address fields are filled out appropriately.

Faculty ID: Be sure to include the E when filling in your EID number.
School Email Address: Please use the format "your my.emich login name"@emich.edu - without the quotes.

2. Another task, is to create a Smart Label for assessments. (Note: this task it usually done for you, before you log into your account.) Over the course of using LiveText, you will be assessing student work. Many times, you will perform these assessments while using rubrics "published" by the EMU COE Administrative account. The easiest way to pick these rubrics out of all of the files coming into your inbox, is to create a label which sorts them out for you. A label that is programmed to perform a certain sort or selection, is called a Smart Label.

To create your Smart Label, click on the edit labels item, under Labels, on the left of the LiveText screen.

Next, click Create, and select Smart Label from the short drop-down list.

This step is critical to the success of this Smart Label: Give this Smart Label the name of: Assessments - make sure it is plural, with the "s" at the end.

In the section where you define the criteria of the Smart Label, use the following information:

A. Popup: Author Popup: Contains Textbox: "Eastern Michigan University College of Education " (without the quote marks). Click Add
B. Popup: Document Type Popup: Is Popup: Assessment. Click Save.

Now you should see the Assessments Smart Label in your list of labels. In the future, COE Assessments needed for those assignments that are part of our data collection process will show up here.

I have students e-mailing me, telling me they can not see the document I shared from my LiveText account. What should I do?

It could be that some of your students registered on the LiveText system after you shared that document. Because the EMU computer system and the LiveText system are not directly connected to one another, you will have to perform a few steps manually.

1. Get a current class roster, via your my.emich account.

If you have created a LiveText "Group" for your class:

2a. Log into your LiveText account, and go to that Group. Compare the LiveText "Group" to your class roster. If there are students missing from your LiveText group, simply click the "Add Members" tab, and then search for and add any missing students.

2b. Next, you will need to "Share" that document with the students you have just added to your "Group". Click on your LiveText "My Work" label, and open the document you need to share. With that document open, click on the "Share" link, in the upper-right corner of the window.

In the little window that pops open, you can add students individually, by typing their name(s) or LiveText account names into the upper section of the window, and then, once the system has located those users, click on their complete names, and make sure their full names appear in the upper section of that small window. See the help page on Sharing Documents, for more information.

If you have NOT created a LiveText Group for your class:

Share the document with the student(s) asking for access to that document, as described in our Sharing Documents web page.

Have a problem with this page? Care to see something added? Please send an e-mail to coe.livetext@emich.edu, and a member of the COE LiveText Support Team will contact you.
