MICHIGAN DEANS COUNCIL CONTINUES WORK ON MANDATORY TEACHER TESTS
The Michigan Deans Council met at UM-Flint on November 22, with Jerry Robbins representing EMU. The agenda was completely devoted to discussions with representatives of the Michigan Department of Education and National Evaluation Systems.
Discussion focused on the subject-matter tests and the "validation" process. Efforts by the deans to alter the validation process in any of several ways have been unsuccessful.
Staff from the Department of Education reported that the state Board of Education has agreed to seek legislative approval, in January, to exempt fall 1992 student teachers from part of the requirements.
COE COUNCIL ACTS ON VARIETY OF ITEMS
At its meeting on November 20, the College of Education Council responded to a request for input from the Provost's office concerning the proposed transfer of the early childhood education minor from the College of Health and Human Services to the College of Education. The Council supported the transfer, along with the transfer of the existing personnel, and included a request that additional FTEF and SS&M funds be included.
(In later action, transmitting the input, the Dean supported all these recommendations except the portion concerning the transfer of the existing personnel.)
The Council also approved four additional professional preparation programs, bringing to 110 the number of programs that EMU will present to NCATE.
Several matters were referred to the Council's Instruction Committee for "work up." The Council considered again, but re-tabled, the recommendation from UCTE to cap post-baccalaureate enrollments.
No substantive actions were taken on two items intended to bring graduate program admission, retention, and exit requirements into minimal compliance with NCATE expectations.
