HONORS PROJECT PRESENTATIONS

Honors Students Sharon C. Mattison and Pamela J. Namyslowski will present their Honors Projects on Wednesday, December 4 in 214 Rackham.

Mattison will present at 4:00 p.m. on "Siblings of Persons with Special Needs: A Workshop." The moderator will be Dale Rice, Honors Adviser. Mattison's presentation will be followed by discussion by Nora Martin and Sandra McClennen. Kathleen Quinn and Robert Holkeboer will make presentations following the discussion.

Namyslowski will present at 5:00 p.m. on "Educating Students in the Regular Classroom about Blindness." Rice will also moderate this session, which includes discussion by George Barach and Delores Corden. Quinn and Holkeboer will make presentations following this discussion.

A reception will follow the two sessions at 6:00 p.m.

COLLINS-EAGLIN ON LEARNING STYLES

Jan Collins-Eaglin will present on "Learning Styles" at noon on December 4. The session will be held in Starkweather Hall and lunch is provided. The session is sponsored by the Faculty Center for Instructional Excellence.

STATE DEPARTMENT SEEKS INPUT ON TEACHER PROFICIENCIES

The Professional Standards Commission of the Michigan Department of Education is seeking input on a draft of "Entry-Level Proficiencies for Michigan Teachers."

The statement includes sections on general education, students' learning and achievement, the subject area and its methodology, managing and monitoring student learning, organizing teaching practices, and participating in learning communities.

A copy is available in each department. The University Council on Teacher Education will discuss the matter on December 5.

AWARDS ANNOUNCED

Nominations are sought for the $150,000 Grawemeyer Award in Education. The deadline is January 31 and the award is made through the University of Louisville for a work of outstanding educational achievement with potential for world-wide impact.  

The $2000 Hollingworth Award is made through Intertel Foundation for proposals for publishable research projects concerning gifted and/or talented young people. Information on both awards is available in the Office of the Dean.

FOCUS ON. . .

CHRISTINA JOSE-KAMPFNER

Christina Jose-Kampfner holds the B.A. in psychology from the University of Mexico, the M.A. in learning disabilities, and the Ph.D. in education and psychology, the graduate degrees from the University of Michigan.

She taught at both UM and EMU in the psychology and women's studies departments before joining the EMU Department of Teacher Education.

Jose-Kampfner has conducted research on post-traumatic stress in children who are separated from their mothers due to incarceration. She is presently conducting a study on post-traumatic stress syndrome as it relates to school failure for Latino youth on the southwest side of Detroit. As part of her research, she is implementing a tutoring program and group therapy aimed at reducing the dropout rate at the junior and senior high school levels.

Jose-Kampfner is a co-founder and active member of the children's visitation program at Huron Valley, Scott Regional, and Washtenaw County jails. She involves students in community programs and believes in building bridges between practice and theory.

She received the teaching excellence award in 1991 from UM and has had many other recognitions from community agencies and academic institutions.

NCATE VISIT DATES SET

EMU was recently notified that the Board of Examiners team will be here on Sunday, November 8 through Wednesday November 11, 1992. Faculty should be available to the team on November 9-10.

DEAN'S SCHEDULE FOR THE WEEK

The Dean's schedule for the week includes interviews with two applicants for a recreation education position, three meetings with faculty members, a presentation on NCATE to the L&C department, and the COE Council meeting.

During the latter part of the week he will be in suburban Chicago, representing Michigan teacher education institutions at an invitational meeting called by the North Central Regional Educational Laboratory. Saturday he attends a portion of the 1992 President's Scholars competition.

THE REST OF THE NEWS THAT FITS

Jane Goodman conducted two workshops on "Lost in Translation" and "What Comes Up: Recurring Themes in Counseling Older Adults" at the Michigan Association of Counseling and Development.

Bert Greene represented the professional education programs of EMU at a national NCATE workshop and orientation session in Washington, D.C.

Jerry Robbins has been named chair of the NCATE Board of Examiners team to Eastern Montana University in Billings.

The dance division of the HPERD department produces a newsletter, "To the Pointe," with items of interest to the area dance community. The content includes recipes for foods of special interest to dancers! 

The next "Coffee with the Dean" session will be on January 31.

The Provost's recent reminder concerning final examination policies should be followed strictly.
