GREENE, JOHNSON HEAD COLLEGE COUNCIL

Bert Greene was elected by the College Council for a two-year term as chair at its meeting on September 18. Marvin Johnson is beginning his second year in a two-year terms as secretary.

Jerry Robbins presented a proposed program of work for the year, generally focused on NCATE preparation, for the Council's review.

The Council approved a motion endorsing the concept of sponsoring a major national symposium during the year and authorized the dean to name the members of a planning committee.

The next meeting is scheduled for October 2. One member from Special Education and three from Teacher Education are yet to be selected.

UCTE ORGANIZES ON SEPT 19

The University Council on Teacher Education met on September 19. No substantive actions were taken.

The dean proposed a program of work for the UCTE for the year, primarily focused on NCATE preparation. Various NCATE matters were discussed.  A number of members are yet to be selected.

ALUM IS STATE TEACHER OF YEAR

Tom Fleming, an EMU special education graduate, has been named as Michigan's "Teacher of the Year" for 1991. Fleming is an employee of the Washtenaw Intermediate School District and teaches at the County Juvenile Detention Center.

ORD SEEKS EDUCATION FACULTYFOR LOCAL FELLOWSHIP

The EMU Office of Research Development is seeking a COE faculty person to serve as a Faculty Fellow in the ORD Office during Winter, Spring, and Summer terms. The person selected would be 1/4 to 1/2 time in Winter and half-time in Spring and Summer.

Duties would include assisting with proposal development and learning more about the awards acquisition process. Interested persons should contact David Clifford at 7-3090.

WITTEN, SCHMITT TO TRAVEL

Winifred Witten and Donna Schmitt were recently awarded $500 each through University sources to support professional travel.

BOARD MEETS SEPTEMBER 25

The EMU Board of Regents meets on September 25.  

MICHIGAN DEANS COUNCIL

The Michigan Deans Council--the Education deans from all public institutions--met recently at Wayne State. Robbie Johnson and Donna Schmitt represented EMU.

The agenda was largely devoted to matters related to the state-mandated basic skills and subject-matter tests for prospective teachers. See Robbie Johnson, the EMU liaison for testing, for additional information.

ROBBINS NAMED HEAD OF UTP

Jerry Robbins was recently elected chair of the Executive Board of the three-institution consortium (EMU, WSU, and WCCC) that operates the Urban Teacher Program. Marvin Pasch continues as the Board's secretary and as EMU coordinator.

The first completer of the two-year portion of the project is now at EMU, with additional students expected in the Winter and next Fall. UTP is funded through a combination of state and FIPSE funds.  

THE REST OF THE NEWS THAT FITS

October 12 is the date for a "tailgate" party for local-area K-12 school personnel. Homecoming is October 19.

Recent new hires in Michigan are 99. 3% fully certified. Michigan has the 3rd highest drop-out rate in the country.

Men's Health found "inner city teaching" as the "most stressful" of 21 occupations.  

EMU CITED FOR EXCELLENCE,IMPORTANCE

At the recent meeting in New Orleans of the Teacher Education Council of State Colleges and Universities (TECSCU), former EMU president John Porter, speaking to the group on the National Standards Board, began his remarks with a lengthy accounting of the excellence of EMU's programming in teacher education.

At the same meeting Penny Earley, AACTE's lobbyist, stated that EMU was potentially the most important institution in efforts related to new Title V legislation because of its connections with Representatives Ford and Purcell.

Two of the eight pages of the July/August issue of the ATE Newsletter are devoted to EMU's CITE program.

DEAN'S SCHEDULE

The dean's schedule for the week includes attending meetings of the EMU Board, the COE Administrative Staff, the course fee subcommittee of the DAC, and a DAC mini-retreat. He is also scheduled to meet with the Provost on performance evaluation.

CLARIFICATION ON UCTE/COUNCIL

The UCTE's charge is to address initial teacher preparation across departmental and college lines. UCTE's recommendations flow to the EMU input system through the College of Education Council, as explained by the dean to both groups recently.
