
An 11-person Committee on the Knowledge Base(s) for the Basic Programs was created by the University Council on Teacher Education (UCTE) at its meeting on October 3.The members of the across-colleges committee will be appointed by various deans and department heads.
In other action, Robbie Johnson was selected secretary and membership was further clarified. Dr. Johnson reported at length on state mandatory testing for basic skills and in the major/minor areas.It was agreed not to forward an earlier action involving EDP 340 until there is further action within the Department of Teacher Education. Other time was spent reviewing a proposed list of the "basic" level teacher education programs.
COE COUNCIL ADVISES ON ASSOCIATEDEAN POSITION
The College of Education Council, at its meeting on October 2, advised the dean informally on processes related to beginning a search to fill the associate dean's position now held on an acting basis by Donna Schmitt.
Membership of the COE Council is now complete; however, two of the standing committees are without chairs.
The Council considered filling the three slots on the UCTE which are open and are its responsibility. It was decided to have the departments of Teacher Education, HPERD, and Special Education nominate one or more persons to consider at the next meeting.
The Council considered filling two slots--one faculty, one student--on the Graduate Council. It was decided to have the Department of HPERD nominate an eligible person for further consideration at the next meeting. It was also decided that each of the four departments would nominate one or more students for consideration at the next meeting.
The Council tabled a motion concerning student teaching credit hours. It adjourned before considering five other substantive items on the agenda.
THREE RECEIVE TRAVEL GRANTS
Three faculty members have recently received travel grants in the amount of $500 each. These are: Leah Adams, Jennifer Beller, and Jerry Ricciardo.
UNITED WAY FUNDS UP
As of October 4, pledges to United Way from the College of Education had come from 42 individuals in the amount of $3455.This includes 14 from Teacher Education, 10 from HPERD, eight from Leadership and Counseling, six from Special Education, and four from the COE administrative offices.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR SCHOOLHOUSE CLEAN-UP
"Clean-up" day for the interior of EMU's One-Room Schoolhouse was rescheduled. Interior renovation is still underway.If you or your group can help, leave contact information with Merri McClure at 7-1414 and additional information will be provided.
The Schoolhouse will be open from 9 to 2 on Homecoming, October 19.
Several artifacts were donated as a result of last week's announcement. Call the dean's office if you have an item, in use at any time up to the early 1950's, that you would donate.
KRAMER BLASTS ED SCHOOLS, EMU GETS ENTIRE CHAPTER
Ed School Follies: The Miseducation of America's Teachers by Rita Kramer (New York: Macmillan) was recently released. Chapter 6 is devoted to EMU and is based on a visit that Kramer made here several months ago.
Pat Cavanaugh, Scott Westerman, Robbie Johnson, and Marv Pasch are among those described, sometimes under fictitious names.
According to Kramer, schools of education are major contributors to the 'dumbing down' of America. David Imig of AACTE called her assertions "absurd."

DEAN'S SCHEDULE
The dean's schedule for the week includes a meeting with the COE administrative staff, a meeting on the NCATE statistical report, a meeting of the EMU deans/heads, a meeting to organize a COE student advisory organization, a meeting with the faculty of the department of Business and Industrial Education (College of Technology), and several appointments with faculty members.
