FIVE TO BE COE GUESTS FOR HIGHER EDUCATION WEEK BREAKFAST

Five prominent community persons will be the guests of the College of Education at a Tuesday breakfast in observance of American Higher Education Week. These include Dr. Youssef (Joe) Yomtoob, Superintendent of the Willow Run Schools.

Also attending will be Ms. Sharalene Thompson, Principal of the Ardis Elementary School; Leo Clark, Principal of Perry Elementary School; Dr. Del Pearson, Chair of the Michigan AMA Committee on Substance Abuse; and Ms. Claire Timmerman, Marketing Coordinator for Life Works Child and Family Services.

STUDENTS AND ALUM RECOGNIZED

Four of the ten students who received the 1991 MCSS Outstanding Social Studies Student Teacher Awards were from EMU. Congratulations to Scott Bradford, Wylie Middle School, Dexter; Pamela Bullock, Bates Elementary School, Dexter; Tracy Heydlauff, South Elementary School, Chelsea; and Alan Yanke, Middle Years Alternative School, Ann Arbor!

Carolyn E. Hutchings, science teacher, Wylie Middle, Dexter, and an EMU alum, has been named as one of the 12 1991 state finalists in the mathematics/science Presidential Awards program.

PACIOREK AWARDED TRAVEL FUNDS

Michael Paciorek recently received, through the University's Faculty Travel Grant program, an award of $500.

SPECIAL EDUCATION HISTORY

The Society for the Preservation of Michigan Special Education History will be interviewing teachers and therapists who served in the Rackham School during the 1960's and '70's.Interviews will be conducted on October 16, 4-6 p.m., in Rackham 214.

 

UNITED WAY DRIVE ENDS IN TWO WEEKS

Only two weeks remain for the 1991 United Way Drive. Those who have not yet participated are urged to do so.

As of October 11, 61 persons connected with the COE had pledged $5530.The pledgers include 17 from Special Education, 16 from Teacher Education, 12 from HPERD, 11 from Leadership and Counseling, and five from other College offices.

THE SPORTS SECTION

Several hundred local-area school personnel were guests of the EMU Division of Academic Affairs for last Saturday's football game.

FOCUS ON. . .

JENNIFER BELLER

Joining the HPERD department this fall, Dr. Jennifer Beller has a major interest in moral reasoning and moral development with student athletes. She has conducted research in this area at the University of Idaho and has been involved with the U.S. Olympic Training Centers.

Beller is in early stages of a program to provide training in moral reasoning to athletes in NCAA schools. She is nearing completion of a study involving moral reasoning among 1500 high school general students and athletes.

Close to home, Beller is revising and developing courses for HPERD in sport philosophy and ethics and in moral reasoning and development.

DEAN'S SCHEDULE

The dean's schedule for the week includes a speech to the Ypsilanti Rotary Club, attending the Higher Education Week breakfast and mini-lectures, attending a reception in his and Robbie Johnson's honor sponsored by the EMU Honors Program, attending the COE Council meeting, presiding over the UCTE meeting, attending a meeting of the Dean's Advisory Council, attending a meeting of former ACE Fellows in Detroit, attending a Regents and President's Council reception and dinner, attending a Presidential and Congressional Scholars breakfast, attending the Alumni luncheon and the One-Room Schoolhouse open house, meeting with the Provost, meeting with the Graduate Dean and other deans, attending a CITE Advisory Board luncheon, and having appointments concerning the forthcoming COE national conference, the clinical associates program, and Summer Quest, among a number of others.

November 6--"Review and Evaluation of Proposals" (same as October 23).

November 15--Nominations due for Distinguished Master's Thesis Award.(Guidelines in each department.)

November 19--visit with the Provost, COE Faculty; 12-1, Boone 31.

THE REST OF THE NEWS THAT FITS

Roberta Anderson has served on a committee that has developed a document on the Medically Fragile that goes to the state Board of Education.

Kathy Quinn has been appointed to the State "Future of Special Education" Study Committee of the Michigan Department of Education.

The former administrative assistant in NICE, Candy Keene, was instrumental in developing the AARP award-winning Women's Financial Information Program.

Robbie Johnson spoke to the Flint Roundtable.

Marvin Pasch will lecture as part of the EMU-community observance of Higher Education Week.
