
MOORE HONORED AT ALUMNI LUNCH
Margaret Moore was honored on Saturday, October 21 at the Green and White Homecoming Luncheon as one of the five inaugural recipients of the Alumni Association Teaching Excellence Awards. Moore was joined by three awardees from Arts and Sciences and one from Business.
UNITED WAY DRIVE NEAR END
Tuesday, October 22 is the last day to turn in pledges for the United Way to the departmental representatives. In turn, departmental representatives need to report final figures on Wednesday, October 23.
As of October 18, 68 persons connected with the COE had pledged $5825. Those pledging include 18 from Special Education, 16 from Teacher Education, 14 from HPERD, 11 from Leadership and Counseling, and nine from other offices in the College.
ROCKLAGE WINS TRAVEL AWARD
Lynne A. Rocklage of Special Education has recently been awarded $500 in the University's Faculty Travel Grant Program.

COE COUNCIL HAS PRODUCTIVE MEETING
Chairperson Bert Greene led the COE Council through a lengthy agenda at its meeting on October 16.
The Council selected Jan Collins-Eaglin (TE) and Marjorie Chamberlain (Sp Ed) to fill two of the three vacant positions on the UCTE which the COE Council is to fill.
Richard Clark of Leadership and Counseling was named as student representative from COE to the Graduate Council. A rotational system for student representatives was created. The remaining COE faculty representative to the Graduate Council is still to be named by the COE Council.
The matter of student teaching hours, tabled at the previous meeting, was taken from the table. The following was passed:
"Moved that all references in the catalog to EDU 492 Student Teaching be changed to make this course 12 semester hours in length;
Further moved that all references in the catalog to program requirements be changed to indicate that eligibility for recommendation for initial certification includes a minimum of 12 hours of student teaching; and
Further moved that this action be applicable to all students who register for student teaching credit for the first time in the Fall of 1992 and thereafter."
Capping enrollments for post-baccalaureate students was addressed by approval of the following motion:
"Moved that no more than 200 post-baccalaureate students per calendar year be admitted for purposes of studying toward initial teaching certification;
Further moved that up to 150 be admitted each year in July (to begin study the following fall) and that up to 50 be admitted each year in November (to begin study the following winter);
Further moved that post-baccalaureate applicants meet all current requirements (e.g., GPA requirements, basic skills test score requirements) before being admitted;
Further moved that this policy not be applicable to students in vocational programs which have as a prerequisite a work experience; and
Further moved that the first admissions under this policy be in July 1992."
The Council approved a list of 106 programs to be defined as the EMU professional preparation programs for NCATE purposes. The Council recommended to the Dean that he take steps to insure that both state records and catalog copy were consistent with this list.
The three substantive items above have been forwarded to the central administration for any further action needed by the EMU Input System before implementation.
In other action the COE Council endorsed the creation of a Community Advisory Committee to advise the College of Education and the professional preparation programs of the University. The Dean of the COE will appoint the committee.
The COE Council created a Committee on the Long-Range Plan for the COE (and the professional preparation programs of the University), to be appointed by the chair of the COE Council.
There was created a Committee on the Knowledge Base(s) for the Advanced Programs, paralleling the comparable committee of the UCTE for the basic programs.
The COE Council endorsed the creation of a Student Advisory Committee to advise the College of Education and the professional preparation programs of the University. A planning group has already met on this matter.
The COE Council tabled a motion concerning test scores for graduate admissions.
The COE Council referred to Education departments for discussion a proposed motion concerning graduate admissions, retention, and exit requirements.
