EMU AFFILIATED PERSONS PROMINENT AT RECENT ATE CONVENTION

At least 19 persons with an affiliation with EMU attended the recent meeting of the Association for Teacher Educators in Orlando.

Prominent among these was Joan C. Bougner of Erickson Elementary School in Ypsilanti, one of our cooperating teachers. Bougner was the winner of the 1992 Distinguished Clinician Award.

Among those presenting papers were Marvin Pasch, Robbie Johnson, and Teri Johnson, who joined with others from elsewhere to present "Reflections of Urban Education: A Tale of Three Cities."

Georgea Sparks-Langer, Rebecca Martusewicz, Maureen McCormack, Pat Pokay, Alane Starko and Kate Morris-Custin (Lincoln Schools) presented "Crossing Delancey: The Meeting of Technical Methods and Critical Reflection in Teacher Education."

Nora Martin and Christine Bills (Stout JHS) presented on "School Improvement and Cultural Diversity," while Rachel Harley and Betty Baker presented on "Women in the Third World: Family Patterns and Development Issues."

Mary Green, Kathy Ashton-Warner, Valerie Palakow and a group from the Ann Arbor schools presented on "Collaborative Qualitative Assessment and Teacher Reflection: Tools Used to Improve Student Outcomes."

Barbara Gorenflo was a presider for a session.

COE COUNCIL, UCTE HAVE PRODUCTIVE MEETINGS

The COE Council, at its meeting on February 19, approved four related proposals from the HPERD Department concerning the prefix, number, and number of hours of credit for courses in dance. The title of EDP 651 was changed and approval was given to a change in the title and descritpion of EDP 652. Several other courses and curricula originating in other colleges were approved.

A proposal was tabled to create an EDM 345 Instructional Applications of Media and Technology (3) and to make this course required and in the place of EDT 300 (1) and EDM 345 (1) in all programs in which EDT 300 and EDM 345 are now required.

Test score requirements for graduate programs in the Department of Special Education were approved. Jerry Robbins reported on budget matters for next year as they affect the University and the College.

Input was provided to the Provost's Office to the effect that the driver education program should be discontinued.

The UCTE heard a major progress report from Georgea Sparks-Langer on the work of the basic-level "knowlege base" committee. Recent developments concerning state-wide testing were reported.

UCTE endorsed a proposal to modify the curriculum of the various secondary social science preparation programs so as to bring them into compliance with mandatory guidelines of the National Council for the Social Studies.

Mar 6--"Motivating Students for the Most Effective Learning"--Georgea Sparks-Langer, 1:30.  

Mar 7--Mathematics Education Conference (sponsored by Dept of Mathematics).

Mar 13--Same as March 6.

Mar 27--Distinguished Faculty Award Nominations due.

Mar 19--"Teaching Graduate Students"--Maureen McCormack and Ray Hill (Management), 12:00.

MISCELLANEOUS

Ariel Payne presented a paper on Balinese Dance in Portugal earlier this month.

The basic-level knowledge base committee is hosting a meeting on the evening of March 2 to invite local-area practitioners to comment on the materials that have been drafted so far.

Jerry Robbins and Robbie Johnson will be in San Antonio most of this week, attending the meeting of the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education and related groups (TECSCU, Renaissance Group deans, etc.).

The Michigan Deans Council met this past week at UM-Dearborn to work on political processes related to the state-mandated teacher testing and as an outgrowth of the recent hearing.
