EMU ALUM NAMED FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHER OF THE YEAR

Jan Wilson, a teacher of French at Tecumseh High School, and an alum of the COE's master's program in secondary school teaching, has been named 1991-92 High School Foreign Language Teacher of the Year.

The award is made by the Michigan Foreign Language Association and will be given to Wilson in ceremonies in Dearborn on April 10.

Wilson has been teaching French at Tecumseh for some 17 years. During this time, she has built enrollments in French to the point that 20% of all students study the language.

AACTE CALL FOR PROPOSALS

The American Association for Colleges of Teacher Education, in which EMU holds an institution membership (thus making all faculty eligible to participate), has issued a Call for Proposals for the organization's next meeting.

The 1993 meeting will be held on February 24-27 in San Diego. Dean Jerry Robbins urges COE faculty to submit proposals. Persons with accepted proposals will be given special consideration for travel support to attend.

Proposals are due not later than June 1, 1992. The theme for the meeting is "America's Children and Youth: The Challenge for Teacher Education." There are four strands: (1) Working with Colleagues on Campus for Today's Children and Youth; (2) Working with Schools for Today's Children and Youth; (3) Working with Communities for Today's Children and Youth; and (4) Working with Policy Makers for Today's Children and Youth.

Presentations may take the form of (1) a paper, (2) a symposium, or (3) an experiential activity. A copy of the Call for Proposals, the application form for submission, and additional information are in each department office.

NATIONAL STUDY IDENTIFIES BEGINNING TEACHER KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS

A national study, reported at the recent meeting of the AACTE in San Antonio, surveyed practicing professionals, school administrators, state education officials, and teacher educators to identify those topics that all "new teachers should know and be able to do."

Sixty-eight topics were identified. These are grouped in the main areas of "human development and the learning process" (14); "knowledge of curriculum planning and design" (11); "management of the learning process" (20); "assessment of the learning process" (8); and "professional issues related to teaching and learning" (11).

A copy of the summary of the report, listing the various topics, is available in each department office.
