COE HELP LINE READY TO GO; SPREAD THE WORD; PLEASE HELP AS CALLED ON
1-800-638-8962 is the number!
Are you a recent completer of an EMU professional education preparation program? Do you need help with a job-related problem? If so, call the number above for EMU assistance.
The information above is being provided to recent EMU program completers. EMU faculty will soon receive flyers about this with a request to help "spread the word" to recent grads.
Here's how it works. A graduate assistant has been trained and is now answering the "1-800" number each evening (from now through the end of the public school year, with service to be resumed in the fall). An answering machine with a recorded message takes the calls that come in at other times.
The GA obtains information from the caller about how to return a call (number, best time to call, etc.) or to send information. The GA also gets a definition of the job-related problem area. This information is placed on a form.
The form is then sent to the appropriate department head, with a request to have a local faculty expert on the topic return a call to the inquirer within 24 hours. A follow-up questionnaire will be sent to the inquirer a few days later to insure that the service provided was satisfactory.
Funds for the support of the operation for the remainder of the year have been made available through the Provost's Office.
The impetus for the activity--to be considered as pilot project for the remainder of the year--was NCATE criterion 35, which calls for the unit "to provide assistance to its graduates who are first year teachers and/or who are beginning other professional education roles."

COE COUNCIL ADOPTS SEVERAL PROGRAM/CURRICULUM CHANGES
At its March 4 meeting, the COE Council tabled a motion to create a new EDM 345 and to make this course required in all programs in which EDT 300 and EDM 345 are now required. (The Council held that insufficient attention had been given to the cases in which both EDT 300 and EDM are not required.)
Revised graduate program admission requirements for the programs in the Department of Teacher Education and for the leadership programs in the Department of Leadership and Counseling were approved.
A proposal from the Department of Special Education covering the full range of admission, retention, and exit requirements was tabled for further discussion concerning culminating experiences.
Two proposed new courses and two revisions of existing courses were referred to the Instruction Committee for "workup" and report back.
A policy concerning alternative grade-point average admission requirements for the initial preparation program was adopted. The intention of this policy is to encourage participation of under-represented groups.
Proposed changes in the basic studies requirements for prospective teachers of the social sciences were adopted. It is intended that these changes will bring EMU into compliance with mandatory guidelines of the National Council for the Social Studies.
The agenda for the next meeting (March 18) will include a review of the "general education" for prospective teachers at EMU and a proposed major and minor in language and literature for the young.
UCTE CONTINUES PROGRAM IMPROVEMENTS
At its meeting on March 5, the University Council on Teacher Education (UCTE) re-endorsed its support of a previously-passed proposal concerning EDP 340.
UCTE also endorsed the program of "general education" for prospective teachers at EMU (NCATE criterion 10).
Approved at a previous meeting but not reported was a proposed major and minor in "Language and Literature for the Young."
Anticipated for the next meeting (March 19) will be a major report from and possible action on aspects of the "knowledge base" for the basic programs. The KB committee anticipates closure soon. Following approval by UCTE and COE Council, numerous aspects of the basic-level program will need to be reviewed and, as necessary, revised to insure conformity with the "model" and "knowledge base."
