
92-93 SABBATICAL LEAVES ANNOUNCED
Trevor Gardner's application for a two-semester sabbatical leave for 1992-93 was recently approved by the Board of Regents. Gardner's two-semester leave is one of only six approved campus-wide.
COE faculty approved for one-semester sabbatical leaves include Sarah Huyvaert, Michael Paciorek, Alane Starko, and Ariel Weymouth-Payne. These four were among twenty-six one-semester sabbatical leaves approved campus-wide.
SPRING/SUMMER RESEARCH AWARDS ANNOUNCED
Proposals from Jennifer Beller and Patricia Pokay have been approved for 1992 Spring-Summer Research Awards in the amount of $6000 each. Beller and Pokay are two of 17 EMU faculty receiving such awards.
MARTUSEWICZ AWARDED FACULTY RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP FOR 1992-93
Rebecca Martusewicz will receive a Faculty Research Fellowship in the amount of $1200 for 1992-1993, according to Provost Collins.

COE COUNCIL PROCESSES MUCH MATERIAL ON APRIL 1
At its April 1 meeting the COE Council approved the following course and program-related items:
New courses: CUR 676 "Education of the Gifted and Talented"; CUR 660 "Supervision of Student Teaching"; ATH 268 "Theory of Coaching Swimming"; PED 220 "Moral Reasoning/Ethics in Sports"; and PED 400 "Cultural and Philosophical Aspects of Physical Education and Sport."
Revised courses: EDP 340 "Introduction to Measurement and Assessment"; EDP 341 "Assessment of the Young Child"; PEG 237 "Basketball"; PEG 236 "Volleyball"; PEG 135
"Softball"; and PEG 353 "American Red Cross Lifeguard Training."
Items from Other Colleges: revisions to the Land Use Planning major and minor; new and changed courses in the MBA program; and changes in the engineering physics concentration. A proposal concerning ROTC was tabled for more information.
A series of course deletions and editorial changes in graduate courses in special education was approved. Several new or substantially revised graduate special education courses were referred to the Instruction Committee for "work up" and report to the Council.
Jeanne Pietig reported on the recent meeting of the COE Community Advisory Committee and its discussion of the proposed "knowlege base" and related matters.
Marvin Pasch, chair of the Long-Range Planning Committee, reported and presented a timeline and chart of major activities to be accomplished.
Additional discussion was held on the advanced level knowledge base task and on the work and functioning of the COE Council.
UCTE MEETS ON APRIL 2
At the UCTE meeting on April 2, several "housekeeping" items were approved as refinements in the lists of programs to be presented to NCATE and definition of the general education portions of those programs.
Discussion was held, but no action taken, on the majors and minors that are appropriate for prospective teachers of elementary education.
Other discussion was held on the COE "Celebration of Excellence" observance, the work of the basic-level "knowledge base" committee, and the "CITE II" proposal.
AMETRANO AND PAPPAS PRESENT AT AACD
Irene Ametrano and John G. Pappas recently presented at the national convention of the American Association for Counseling and Development in Baltimore. Their session was on "Counseling Adults in Transition: An Integrated Perspective."
KDP MEMBERS PRESENT AT BIENNIAL CONVOCATION
A large delegation of members of EMU's Pi chapter of Kappa Delta Pi attended the recent biennial convocation in Memphis. The chapter's proposal for a presentation on its activities had been accepted. Thomas Gwaltney also presented at a separate session. Jerry Robbins participated in the meeting as a former international president of the organization.
COE HONORS PROGRAM GRADS ANNOUNCED
Forthcoming graduates who are both in the COE and the Honors Program include: Kristin Adamski, Sherri Bonner, Karin Brinkman, Eileen Colling, Lisa Falkenberg, Katherine Graham, Kristin Heller, Marsha Isenhoff, Susan Jesse, Jacqueline McGarry, Cheryl Peters, Beverly Smith, and Darlene Strasser.
