THOMAS FLEMING, EMU/COE/SP ED ALUM, NAMED AS 1992 NATIONAL TEACHER OF THE YEAR
Thomas Fleming, whose study of professional education was at and whose master's degree is from EMU, was named this past week as the 1992 National Teacher of the Year.
Fleming, head teacher at Washtenaw County Juvenile Detention Center, received his masters degree in special education at EMU after having completed a G.E.D. and a bachelors degree in religious education.
Having spent several years in reform school, Fleming, 59, did not learn to read until he was in his 20's.
In 1968, he began teaching at the W.J. Maxey Boys Training School and, in 1970, he began at the Washtenaw Detention Center.
In his current position, Fleming teaches about 200 students per year, ages 12-16, as students spend various lengths of time at the Detention Center. He believes that his method of teaching troubled youths can be applied to all students. A prominent former student is comedian A. Whitney Brown of Saturday Night Live fame.
Fleming currently serves as Michigan's Teacher of the Year. Since January, he has been "on the road," an experience he will continue during the 1992-93 school year.
