DIAMOND & MOORE WIN AASCU/CHRISTA McAULIFFE AWARD
Barbara Diamond and Margaret Moore have won the 1992 Christa McAuliffe Showcase for Excellence Award, sponsored by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities.
Diamond and Moore's entry on "The Use of Multicultural Literature to Develop Cultural Awreness and Reading and Writing Skills" was judged best in the "applied research" category.
The award will be presented next month in Washington in ceremonies presided over by President Bush and Secretary of Education Alexander.
The longitudinal research project conducted by Diamond and Moore focuses on the collaboration between university professors and teachers within three culturally diverse school districts in order to implement a multicultural literature-based program. The study has examined the implementation of the program and its effects on reading/writing performance and on attitudes toward other cultures of fourth/fifth graders.
