RILEY NOMINATED FOR TEACHER EDUCATION DEPARTMENT HEAD

Subject to approvals, including that of the Board of Regents, James D. Riley has been recommended by Dean Jerry Robbins to be Head of the Department of Teacher Education, effective July 1.

Riley is currently Associate Dean of the College of Education at Northeastern State University, Tahlequah, Oklahoma.  He holds the B.A. and the M.A.T. in English from Oakland University, and the M.A.T. (Oakland University) and the Ph.D. (Syracuse University) in reading education.

He has taught at the junior high and adult levels, as well as his university experience.  His professorial experience has been at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (1 year) and at the University of Montana (12 years).  He was the West Foundation Distinguished Visiting Professor at Midwestern State University (Texas) in 1989.  He has been at NESU for the past three years.

Riley is founder and co-director of the Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Counseling and director of the School Partnership Program, both at NESU in Oklahoma.  He has had major leadership roles in NCATE preparation, educational research, and faculty development in his present position.

At Montana, where he advanced through the ranks from assistant professor to professor, Riley was coordinator of reading education, director of the UM summer reading cooperative, and chair of the masters and specialist degree programs in education. 

Riley's intellectual interests have been in the field of reading.  He is the author of a number of articles on reading, which have appeared in The Reading Teacher, Clearing House, Journal of Educational Research, Reading World, and others.  He has presented a number of papers at meetings of the International Reading Association (IRA).  Papers on reading, as well as other topics, have been presented at AACTE and at various regional, state and local meetings.  He has been instrumental in the writing of several large grants.

In addition to several positions held within IRA structures, Riley has been president of Phi Delta Kappa chapters in both Montana and Oklahoma.  He is a former president of the Montana Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development.  He is active in both ATE and AACTE and the respective state affiliates.

He received the Phi Delta Kappa Service Key in 1989 and the PDK "Make a Difference" award in 1987.  He was appointed by the Secretary of Education as an evaluator for the National Secondary School Recognition Program.

Active in faculty governance at the University of Montana, he was at one time a member of the UTU Bargaining Council.  He has chaired a number of masters committees and several doctoral committees.

ODDS AND ENDS

The COE Council attempted to meet on May 6, but did not have a quorum present.  The next scheduled meeting is May 20. 

The University Council on Teacher Education attempted to meet on May 7, but did not have a quorum present.  The next scheduled meeting is May 21.

Jack Minzey will be inducted into the Michigan Education Hall of Fame during a dinner in Lansing on May 14.  Several EMU friends are planning to attend.

The One-Room Schoolhouse Committee is no more.  After more than eight years of work related to obtaining, moving, and restoring the Geddes Town Hall School, the group considered its work substantially completed and disbanded.  Dean Rockwell headed this work during much of the time.

The Friends of the Schoolhouse is currently being organized to deal with artifacts and programming.  A celebration of the transition is scheduled for the Schoolhouse on May 16.

Workshops in Wordperfect 5.1, Basic DOS, Quattro Pro, Lotus 1-2-3, Excel, Pagemaker, and Banyan are being offered by University Computing.  Call 7-3141 for additional information and registration.

PLANNING AHEAD

May 16--Celebration of completion of restoration of Town Hall School; Schoolhouse, 2-4 p.m.

June 1--Deadline for submission of manuscripts to JTE for "Issues in Teacher Education."  Deadline for program submissions for 1993 AACTE annual meeting; theme: "America's Children and Youth: The Challenge for Teacher Education."  Deadline for program submissions for 1993 ATE annual meeting; theme: "A Celebration of Diversity in Teacher Education."  Special COE travel assistance will be provided for first-time ATE and AACTE presenters.

June 29--Registration for 1st term ICPSR summer program in quantitative methods (UM, free to EMU faculty); 2nd term registration is July 27.

June 30--Coffee with the Associate Deans.

August 1--Deadline for submission of applications for ATE Distinguished Research in Teacher Education Award.  Deadline for manuscripts to JTE on "Teacher Assessment."

August 12--Phillip Schlechty meets with EMU professional preparation faculty on reforming preparation programs, 2:00-3:30, WISD.

August 31--(tentative) COE Fall Faculty Conference (all day).

November 8-11--NCATE Board of Examiners visit.
