TEN IN COE AWARDED TENURE

Ten members of the COE Faculty were granted indeterminate tenure, effective September 1, 1992, at the recent meeting of the EMU Board of Regents.

These are:  Eddie Bedford, William Brozo, Carole Gorenflo, Rebecca Martusewicz, Angela Massenberg, Maureen McCormack, Margaret Moore, Karen Paciorek, Patricia Pokay, and Joan Sheard.

SHORT ITEMS

Thomas Bushey has been named Acting Assistant Dean of the Graduate School for 1992-93, according to Graduate Dean Ronald Goldenberg.

The Physical Plant Department is sponsoring its fifth annual "Adopt a Flower Bed" program.  The Department will prep the sites and supply the flowers.  Individuals and faculty and student groups are invited to plant, weed, and water through the growing season.  For more information, contact Jeff Allen at 7-4194. 

The Michigan Department of Education has established a Computer Bulletin Board for certification matters.  The telephone number is 517-335-0587.  Communications software should be set: data bits=8, stop bits=1, parity=none, baud rate=2400 bps

FROM THE GOVERNANCE BODIES. . .

For the second consecutive time, the University Council on Teacher Education did not have a quorum to transact business.  The next scheduled meeting is June 4.

The College of Education Council met on May 20.  The following actions were taken:

o  The GRE was approved as the standardized admission test for the masters program in music education.

o  Several "housekeeping" items were approved in connection with the list of programs to be presented to NCATE.

o  Proposed course changes were referred to the Instruction Committee for "workup" and report (CUR 573 to CUR 673, CUR 520 to CUR 620, CUR 550 to CUR 650).

o  Policy concerning culminating experiences for programs in educational leadership was approved.

o  Retention and exit requirements for masters programs in early

childhood education, elementary, middle school, secondary, K-12 teaching, reading, and educational psychology were approved.

o  Admission, retention, and exit requirements for the masters program in educational media and technology were approved.  (See p.2)

o  Revised curricular requirements for masters programs in elementary, secondary, middle school, K-12, and reading were approved.

o  Amendments to the retention and exit requirements for the masters program in art education were approved.

o  Amendments to the basic-level specialty studies in earth science were approved, as were amendments to the specialist-level educational leadership program.

o  Substantive changes in SGN 510, 511, 615, 619, 690; SEI 614, 616, 620, 663; SLI 595, 694; and SMI 635 were approved--as were new courses SGN 690, 691 692 (Thesis); SGN 790, 791, 792 (Thesis); and SGN 522 (Male Behavior:  Assessment and Intervention).  A substantive change in SGN 390 and a title change in PED 581 were approved, along with additional items from English, Business Education, and Military Science.

o  Reports were given on the Human Subjects Review Committee and on the status of teacher testing and alternative certification of teachers and administrators.

o  The theme and report of the Knowledge Base Committee for the basic-level programs was approved.

o  Proposed items covering the definition of acceptable majors and minors for elementary and secondary/K-12 programs were tabled pending further information.

o  The proposed statement of professional studies courses covering the basic-level programs was approved.

o  Election of COE members to the Graduate Council is set for June 3.

PLANNING AHEAD

June 1--Deadline for submission of manuscripts to JTE for "Issues in Teacher Education."  Deadline for program submissions for 1993 AACTE annual meeting; theme: "America's Children and Youth: The Challenge for Teacher Education."  Deadline for program submissions for 1993 ATE annual meeting; theme: "A Celebration of Diversity in Teacher Education."  Special COE travel assistance will be provided for first-time ATE and AACTE presenters.

June 29--Registration for 1st term ICPSR summer program in quantitative methods (UM, free to EMU faculty); 2nd term registration is July 27.

June 30--Coffee with the Associate Deans.

July 15--Deadline for case studies for 1993 AACTE program.

July 31--Deadline for nominations for AACTE Annual Award ($500) for Excellence in Professional Writing.

August 1--Deadline for submission of applications for ATE Distinguished Research in Teacher Education Award.  Deadline for manuscripts to JTE on "Teacher Assessment."

August 12--Phillip Schlechty meets with EMU professional preparation faculty on reforming preparation programs, 2:00-3:30, WISD.

August 31--(tentative) COE Fall Faculty Conference (all day).

November 8-11--NCATE Board of Examiners visit.
