JAPANESE LAWYERS VISIT NICE

Fifteen lawyers from Japan are scheduled to visit the National Institute on Consumer Education (NICE) on June 1.

The attorneys are members of the Consumer Problems Committee of the Japan Federation of Bar Associations.  The visit to EMU is the first and primary stop in the group's visit to the United States.

The lawyers believe that a way to address consumer problems is through consumer education.  However, in Japan, consumer education is limited and often sponsored by business enterprises.

There is concern that the business sponsorship may have elements of self-interest.  Therefore, there is interest in having more consumer education taught in the schools of Japan.  A particular problem at this time in Japan is the rapid increase in the number of persons declaring bankruptcy because of the misuse of credit cards and personal loans.

The visit is an outgrowth of the recent international conference sponsored by NICE in Japan.  One of the members of the delegation attended the conference and requested permission to visit NICE headquarters at EMU.  NICE Director Rosella Bannister and her staff will be serving as hosts.
