WESTERMAN SELECTED AS DISTINGUISHED PROFESSOR AT EMPORIA STATE
W. Scott Westerman, Jr., former EMU Education Dean, has been named as the Jones Distinguished Professor for Fall 1992 at Emporia (Kansas) State University.
Emporia State, like EMU, is a former teachers college and a member of the Renaissance Group. For several years, Emporia State has filled the Jones Chair on an annual basis with a nationally-known distinguished leader in teacher education. The most recent holder was J.T. Sandefer, former Education dean at Western Kentucky University.
Westerman, in addition to serving as dean, served the EMU College of Education as a department head and, after his retirement as dean, as a professor. Prior to 1971, he was superintendent of the Ann Arbor Schools.
MENTORS NAMED FOR NEW FACULTY IN TEACHER EDUCATION
Sally Martin has been designated as the mentor for new faculty member Jane Gordon. Similarly, Georgea Sparks-Langer has been named as mentor for Jaime Grinberg and Jan Collins-Eaglin has been designated as mentor for Sylvia Jones. All are in Teacher Education.
EXERCISE CITIZENSHIP RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: VOTE IN SCHOOL ELECTIONS
Many COE faculty, staff, and students live in school districts where elections are being held today. All who are eligible are encouraged to vote in these elections, making informed choices.
Depending on the district, issues on the ballot will include the selection of school board members, to renew or increase school taxes, to approve bond issues, to override the Headlee Tax Limitation Amendment, and to address "choice" options.

Social Note. Jeanne Pietig was the guest of honor at a recent dinner and "roast" attended by Jerry Robbins, Robbie Johnson, Donna Schmitt, Pat Cavanaugh, Kathy Quinn, and Martha Tack. Pietig was presented a gift by the group. Entertainment was provided through a special media presentation prepared by Johnson and Schmitt.
Political Correctness. MR will no longer refer to "short" people; instead "vertically challenged" will be used. Similarly, "old"
people will be called "chronologically gifted," and "stupid" persons will be called "cerebrally challenged." "Lazy" persons will be referred to as "motivationally dispossessed."
