PROMOTIONS FOR 12 COE FACULTY APPROVED

Twelve members of the College of Education faculty recently received final approval for promotion in academic rank, effective with the coming year.

Promoted to full professor were Gary Banks and Helen Ditzhazy.

Promoted to associate professor were William Brozo, Carole Gorenflo, Rebecca Martusewicz, Angela Massenberg, Maureen McCormack, Joann McNamara, Margaret Moore, Karen Paciorek, Patricia Pokay, and Suzanne Marie Zelnik-Geldys.

KOREAN ECONOMISTS VISIT NICE

A delegation of eight representatives of the Korea Consumer Protection Board recently visited the National Institute for Consumer Education (NICE).

Rosella Bannister, Patricia Bonner, and John Knapp from the NICE staff briefed the Korean visitors not only on the work of NICE but on consumer education in the United States. 

The delegation was headed by Sung Dae Cho, Managing Director of the Korea Consumer Protection Board.  Other leaders of the party included Houe Jung Chun and Ju Byung Lee, both assistant division chiefs.

COLLINS-EAGLIN AND KARABENICK AWARDED $70,000 FOR RESEARCH GRANT

Jan Collins-Eaglin and Stuart Karabenick (Psychology) have been awarded $70,000 from EMU's Research Excellence Award program for "The Advanced Study of Post-secondary Teaching and Learning: A Focused, Participatory Program of Basic and Applied Research at EMU."

The project, to be conducted over a two-year period, is designed to (1) establish EMU as an active contributor to the fund of knowledge on post-secondary teaching and learning; (2) increase the level of expertise at EMU in research on post-secondary teaching and learning; (3) increase the awareness at EMU of the relevance of research on post-secondary teaching and learning in developing and achieving student-centered institutional priorities; (4) enhance classroom teaching and learning at EMU; and (5) develop a transportable model of faculty development.

The project will be conducted under the auspices of the Faculty Center for Instructional Excellence.

BLAIR SERVES AS VISITING SCHOLAR

John Blair has been appointed as a Visiting Scholar in the Department of Psychology at the University of Notre Dame this summer.    

COE ENDOWMENT INCREASED BY $5,000

The College of Education Endowment Fund has been increased by $5,000, according to a recent notification from Executive Vice President Roy Wilbanks.  An undesignated gift to the university from a donor not identified resulted in this action.

ADDITIONAL PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLARS CHOOSE COE PROGRAMS FOR MAJOR

Janice Mary Habarth, a recent graduate of Lakeview High School, St. Clair Shores, has been awarded a Presidential Scholarship (four-year, full ride) to EMU.  Habarth, an accomplished musician (piano, French horn, singer), was president of her school's Student Congress.

Co-captain of the Quiz Bowl team, she has also been active in the National Honor Society.  She has indicated interest in becoming a teacher of special education.

Another Presidential Scholar is Adam Steven Collett, a recent graduate of Wyoming (OH) High School.  Collett received numerous recognitions for academic achievement in such fields as English, French, and government.  From 1986 to 1990 he was a volunteer at a day camp for handicapped youngsters.  More recently he has worked at a residential camp for the handicapped.  In addition, he has served as a volunteer for a local children's hospital and as a tutor for developmentally handicapped high school and middle school youths.

Recognized in the Cincinnati area for his community service, Collett is interested in becoming a special education teacher.

Deborah C. Gryniewicz, a recent graduate of Ann Arbor's Pioneer High School, is a Presidential Scholar who has expressed an interest in therapeutic recreation or in some other teaching/counseling role.  Gryniewicz had the opportunity to work in an orphanage in Honduras and she has been active in the International Club at Pioneer.  She was also part of a ceramics class given a grant by the AATA to design and build a mural for the bus shelter at Pioneer.

Other high school activities for Gryniewicz have included the literary magazine, the yearbook, and the National Honor Society.

PACIOREK PLANS SUMMER ACTIVITIES WITH U.S. DISABLED SPORTS TEAM IN BARCELONA

Michael Paciorek has been selected in national competition as a staff member of the U.S. Cerebral Palsy Athletic Association contingent of the U.S. Disabled Sports Teams.  His responsibilities will include research associate, journalist, coach, and assistant to the team leader.

In July Paciorek will participate in the USCPAA training camp at Ball State University.  During a portion of August and September he will be in Barcelona assisting with the IX Paralympic Games.

The U.S. Disabled Sports Team consists of some 500 athletes, coaches, and staff from five national disabled sports organizations, a part of the U.S. Olympic Committee.  Fifteen sports are included in the Paralympic Games.

NOMINATIONS SOUGHT FOR EMU ALUMNI TEACHING EXCELLENCE AWARDS

Nominations are sought for the annual EMU Alumni Association Awards for Teaching Excellence.  All faculty members who have held a full-time appointment at EMU for three or more academic years are eligible, with the exception of those who have received the Award for Teaching Excellence within the past five years.

The awards will be recognized at Homecoming, September 26.  Nomination forms are available in department offices.  The deadline for submission is August 7.  Additional information is available from the Alumni Office (7-0250).

UM EQUITY CONFERENCE ANNOUNCED

The School of Education of the University of Michigan has announced a conference on "Critical Issues in Race, Gender, and National Origin Equity."  The conference will be held October 14-16 at the Sheraton University Inn.  Additional information is available at 763-9910. 

COFFEE WITH THE ASSOCIATE DEANS

Coffee with the COE associate deans will be held on Tuesday, June 30.  Robbie Johnson and Donna

Schmitt will in the Boone lounge 8:30 to 9:30, in the Rackham lounge 12-1, and in the Warner lounge 4:30-5:30.

Faculty, staff, and students are invited.  No agenda.

SURVEY RESULTS--RECENT GRADUATES

The EMU Office of Career Services provided to the COE a list of those persons who completed a professional preparation program during 1989-90 and who were employed by an educational organization in 1990-91.

During 1991-92 COE personnel sent to each of these people a survey form.  Responses were received from 131 persons whose preparation had been at the baccalaureate level, 259 persons whose preparation had been at the masters level, 18 persons whose preparation had been at the specialist level, and 22 persons who did not receive a degree in connection with their preparation program.

In 1991-92 (second year out), the responses to the extent the respondent intended to make professional education a career were (total likely and highly likely):

bachelor's: 78%

masters: 80%

specialist: 83%

no degree: 71%

Asked the extent to which the courses in the EMU program in professional education provided the knowledge and skills for success in the current position, the responses were (total of "all" and "majority"):

bachelors: 58%

masters: 57%

specialist: 0%

no degree: 59%

Asked about the level of confidence held in carrying out current responsibilities, "extremely confident" was reported by:

bachelors: 51%

masters: 70%

specialist: 100%

no degree: 42%

Where possible, immediate supervisors of these persons were contacted.  Based on 55 responses, 44% of the supervisors found the EMU persons to be "outstanding" compared with other professionals with comparable experience.  Another 40% rated the EMU grads as "above average."

Supervisors said they would rehire the EMU program completer in 89% of the instances and wouldn't rehire in 11% of the instances.

Supervisors found the EMU program completers to be "very effective" in their professional responsibilities in 73% of the instances and "moderately effective" in another 22% of the instances.

A majority of the supervisors (58%) found the EMU program completers to be "well prepared in all aspects" of the professional responsibility and 27% found them to be "well prepared in most aspects."

"Extremely confident" or "confident" in carrying out professional responsibilities described the EMU program completers in 86% of the cases, according to the supervisors.

Supervisors tended to be principals and "one year" of supervision of the EMU alum was modal.
