RUSCHE ANNOUNCED AS CHAIR OF EMU NCATE TEAM

Phillip J. Rusche, Dean of the College of Education at the University of Toledo, has been announced as the chair of EMU's Board of Examiners (BOE) team for NCATE.

"This is an excellent choice," said Jerry Robbins, dean.  "I have known and worked with Dr. Rusche for a number of years.  He is a skilled and experienced NCATE BOE team member and chair."

Former dean Scott Westerman added that "Dr. Rusche is very familiar with our type of institution and with our environment.  I'm delighted that he has been assigned to EMU."

Rusche will visit EMU in September to insure that all is in readiness for the team visit in November.  The composition of the remainder of the six person team is not yet complete.

SCHLECHTY EVENT TIME CHANGE TO 1 P.M.

Phillip Schlechty will meet with EMU professional preparation faculty members on reforming preparation programs on August 12 at the Washtenaw Intermediate School District building.  However, the time for this meeting has been changed to 1:00 p.m.  Attendance is urged.

BARTON SCHOLARS NAMED

Annette M. Bates of Mt. Clemens, Jane S. Goerge of Ann Arbor, and Marsha L. Isenhoff of Wayland have been named as Barton Scholars for the fall of 1992.

Barton Scholars are full-time graduate students in special education who have outstanding academic ability.  Selection is made by the Graduate School Scholarship Committee with support from the Barton Scholarship Fund.

GRADUATE FACULTY APPOINTMENTS ANNOUNCED

Ronald Goldenberg, dean of the Graduate School, has announced the following graduate faculty appointments in the College of Education:

Full graduate faculty: James D. Riley.

Provisional graduate faculty: Jane Gordon.

Provisional associate graduate faculty:  Lawrence Geffen, Jaime G.A. Grinberg, Marvin Skore.

FLEISCHER ACTIVE WITH WRITING PROJECTS

Cathy Fleischer (English) has a grant from the National Writing (continued on back)

Project which has supported teachers from local area schools as they have participated in an invitational five-week institute this summer.

In this institute, the teachers have learned from each other about the teaching of writing and they have developed in-service strategies to take to their respective school districts.

Fleischer has also formed a teacher-research group that meets monthly to discuss teacher research projects related to writing and the language arts.  Fleischer and Paula Monette, a Detroit teacher, recently presented at NCTE on "teacher researchers from the start."

July 31--Deadline for nominations for AACTE Annual Award ($500) for Excellence in Professional Writing. 

August 1--Deadline for submission of applications for ATE Distinguished Research in Teacher Education Award.  Deadline for manuscripts to JTE on "Teacher Assessment."

August 2-4--"Focus on Men" symposium, Corporate Education Center.  For information, call 487-0407.

August 7--Deadline for nominations for Alumni Association Teaching Excellence Awards.

August 12--Phillip Schlechty meets with EMU professional preparation faculty on reforming preparation programs, 1:00, WISD, no charge.  PARTICIPATION IMPORTANT!

August 31--COE Fall Faculty Conference (all day), Sheraton University Inn, I-94 and State.  Lunch included. 

September 15--deadline for AASA convention papers on collaborative field-university school-based research.

October 1--Deadline for manuscripts to JTE on "The Impact of Accreditation and State Program Approval on Teacher Education Programs."

October 15--deadline for manuscripts to Proteus on "Multiculturalism."

October 31--deadline for submission for AACTE's Outstanding Dissertation Research Award.

November 6--deadline for submissions to AERA for Outstanding Book Award, Outstanding Contributions Relating Research to Practice, and the Cattell Early Career Award for Programmatic Research.

November 8-11--NCATE Board of Examiners visit.

November 13--Deadline for submission for ASCD's Outstanding Dissertation Award (for dissertations completed in curriculum/instruction/supervision between 9/1/91 and 8/31/92)

December 1--Deadline for manuscripts to JTE on "Restructuring Schools, Colleges, Departments of Education (SCDE's) and the Public Schools."

February 1--Deadline for manuscripts to JTE on "Teacher Education in Relation to National Goals."

April 1--Deadline for manuscripts to JTE on "Supply and Demand of New Teachers and Proposed National Standards and New Sources for Teachers."
