DOCTORAL STUDENT JOAN TUCKER WINS AASA AWARD; ONE OF FIVE IN NATION
Doctoral student Joan Tucker, assistant superintendent and business manager of the Lincoln schools, is one of five graduate students in the country to receive the Forrest E. Conner Scholarship, awarded in national competition through the American Association of School Administrators.
Funding is provided by the exhibitors at the annual AASA convention. The scholarship is to encourage men and women of demonstrated competence to prepare for a professional career in the school superintendency, according to Richard Miller, AASA Executive Director.
Tucker will be recognized in ceremonies in Orlando, FL in February. She is a member of the first cohort of students in the doctoral program in educational leadership.
STARKO NAMED TO BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF GIFTED CHILDREN ASSOCIATION; RUPERT INVOLVED WITH ITEM REVIEW
Alane Starko has been elected to a two-year term on the board of directors of the National Association for Gifted Children.
Terry Rupert will participate in an item review for the basic skills test for prospective teachers.
BANNISTER PRESENTS IN MADRID THIS WEEK
Rosella Bannister is presenting this week on "Consumer Education in the United States" at the international conference on "Technology and the Consumer." The conference is being held at the Universidad Compultense in Madrid, Spain.
TRANSFORMING PUBLIC SCHOOLS CONFERENCE SET FOR AUGUST 10-14 AT WISD
Ann Arbor Schools, the Washtenaw ISD, and EMU Continuing Education are sponsoring a conference on "Transforming Public Schools" August 10-14 at the WISD building.
Featured speakers include Phillip Schlechty of the Center for Leadership and School Reform of Louisville, KY; Suzanne Pasch, Director, Center for Teacher Education of Milwaukee; and Gary Buehler, Superintendent, New York Gouveneur Central School District.
EMU professional education faculty are invited and urged to attend a free session with Schlechty at 1:00 p.m. on August 12. Discussion will focus on reforming preparation programs.
JOHNSON, SCHMITT REPRESENT EMU AT MEETINGS
Robbie Johnson recently represented EMU at a national meeting of the Renaissance Group at Northern Illinois University. She also recently participated in the ATE summer workshop on diversity.
Donna Schmitt represented the COE at a recent meeting of the Michigan Deans Council in Marquette where the major topic was, as usual, mandatory state testing.

The second is an RFP from the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education that should be of interest to many faculty members.
