PHILLIP SCHLECHTY TO PRESENT TO EMU TEACHER EDUCATORS

Phillip Schlechty of the Center for Leadership and School Reform of Louisville, KY will present to EMU teacher educators on August 12 at 1:00 p.m. at the Washtenaw Intermediate School District Headquarters on Wagner Road.

There is no charge for this program and College of Education faculty and others involved with EMU professional preparation programs are invited and urged to attend.

In recent years, Schlechty has written and presented extensively on teacher education programs, teacher induction, beginning teachers, and the interaction between preparation programs and the work of work of the teacher.  He is appearing in the local area as part of the "Transforming Our Public Schools" conference sponsored by the Ann Arbor Schools, Washtenaw Intermediate School District, and EMU Continuing Education.

VENDING MACHINES IN BOONE

Food and beverage vending machines in Boone Hall have been relocated to the lower level, west end.  This relocation is intended to increase aesthetics and improve services, according to Donna Schmitt, Boone Hall building administrator.

GRADUATE FACULTY APPOINTMENTS ANNOUNCED

Graduate Dean Ron Goldenberg has announced the following graduate faculty appointments in the College of Education:

To Provisional Graduate Faculty: Christine E. Phelps.

To Provisional Associate Graduate Faculty:  Yvonne L. Callaway, Alison Harmon, and Jaclynn R. Tracy.

A number of appointments were made to the Provisional Part-time Associate Graduate Faculty as well.  All persons receiving the appointments mentioned above are affiliated with the Department of Leadership and Counseling.

BOONE HALL "SPRUCE UP" CONTINUING

As part of a "spruce up" of Boone Hall being conducted by EMU's Physical Plant Department, the faculty/staff lounge is currently being refurbished.  As a result, the lounge has been temporarily relocated for a few days while painting, re-carpeting, and other such activities are underway.

August 31--COE Fall Faculty Conference (all day), Sheraton University Inn, I-94 and State.  Lunch included. 

September 15--deadline for AASA convention papers on collaborative field-university school-based research.

October 1--Deadline for manuscripts to JTE on "The Impact of Accreditation and State Program Approval on Teacher Education Programs."

October 15--deadline for manuscripts to Proteus on "Multiculturalism."

October 23--deadline for proposals (papers, concurrent sessions, pre-conference workshops) for the 12th annual EMU Conference on Languages and Communication for World Business and the Professions.

October 31--deadline for submission for AACTE's Outstanding Dissertation Research Award.

November 1--deadline for manuscripts to Action in Teacher Education (ATE) on "Gender Equity Issues in Teaching and Teacher Education."

November 6--deadline for submissions to AERA for Outstanding Book Award, Outstanding Contributions Relating Research to Practice, and the Cattell Early Career Award for Programmatic Research.

November 8-11--NCATE Board of Examiners visit.

November 13--Deadline for submission for ASCD's Outstanding Dissertation Award (for dissertations completed in curriculum/instruc-

tion/supervision between 9/1/91 and 8/31/92)

December 1--Deadline for manuscripts to JTE on "Restructuring Schools, Colleges, Departments of Education (SCDE's) and the Public Schools."

February 1--Deadline for manuscripts to JTE on "Teacher Education in Relation to National Goals"; manuscripts to ATE on "National Forces on Teaching and Teacher Education."

April 1--Deadline for manuscripts to JTE on "Supply and Demand of New Teachers and Proposed National Standards and New Sources for Teachers."

MODELS ON AGENDA OF NEXT COE COUNCIL MEETING

Models on the agenda for the next meeting of the College of Education Council include:

(covering master's programs in early childhood, elementary, middle school, secondary, K-12, and reading) "The development of educators who are committed to their ongoing professional growth and are aware of the challenges of democracy in our culturally diverse society.  These educators will assert leadership, apply and practice scholarship, and exercise reflective thinking to meet the needs of learning communities."

(covering music education) "An advanced musician/teacher education program to provide the knowledge and competencies necessary for meeting the culturally diverse music education needs of the twenty-first century."  (More later.)
