ONE OF FOUR EMU STUDENTS IS IN A PROFESSIONAL PREPARATION PROGRAM

According to statistics recently released by Paul Moniodis, Director of Institutional Analysis and Reporting, "of 19,212 undergraduate enrollments [Fall 1991], 4,087, or 21.3 percent, are in teaching curricula.

Jerry Robbins estimates that, by the time the large graduate enrollment in professional education programs is included, about 25% of the EMU student body is involved in professional education preparation.  Robbins added that "there are few data to support this, but it would appear that this figure is unusually high for an institution that is of any appreciable size."

Of the 4,087 enrollments, 2799 (68%) are in programs housed in the College of Education (e.g., elementary education, special education, physical education).  Another 1112 (27%) are in secondary or K-12 programs housed in the College of Arts and Sciences.  Secondary programs housed in Technology and Health and Human Services account for 3% and 1% of the students, respectively.

Conversely, 10.6% of the College of Education's undergraduate enrollment is in non-teacher education programs, all in the HPERD department.

Among the prospective teachers, 22% are male.  Teaching fields in which the number of men exceeds the number of women include biology, computer science, earth science, geography, general science, physics, political science, physical education, marketing education, industrial education, and industrial-vocational education.

Elementary education is by far the largest field.  Others with over 100 prospective teachers include English, history, mathematics, physical education, emotionally impaired, hearing impaired, mentally impaired, and speech-language impaired.

There are no prospective teachers in the teaching fields of economics or sociology.  Other low enrollment programs are psychology, physics, geography, Japanese, and German, all with no more than 10.
