LEAH ADAMS NAMED AS RECIPIENT OF ALUMNI TEACHING EXCELLENCE AWARD
Leah Adams, whose work with prospective and current early childhood teachers for more than two decades has endeared her to countless students, has been named by the EMU Alumni Association to receive its Teaching Excellence Award.
The award will be formally presented to Adams during Homecoming Activities on September 26. The Alumni Association uses this award as a method of recognizing faculty who place a high priority on teaching.
Adams hold degrees from The Ohio State University, Wayne State University, and the University of Michigan. In addition to her career in higher education, she has taught at the pre-school level, at the secondary level, and at the adult level. Adams recently returned from a trip to Iceland and Ireland, where she visited educational institutions and personnel.
RICHARD CLARK NAMED TO MCPA EXECUTIVE BOARD
Richard Clark, a master's student in guidance and counseling, and a former departmental graduate student, has been named to the executive board of the Michigan College Personnel Association.
FOUR SPITLER SCHOLARSHIP AWARDEES ANNOUNCED
Four students taking the early childhood minor have been named as recipients of the Mary A. Spitler Scholarship. They are:
Fiorella Valmassoi, a pre-school teacher from Gibraltar;
Gayle Wismer, who is working with children from chemically dependent families;
Rachael Thornberry, a Head Start graduate who is interested in working with children in open education settings;
Claudette Bourseleth, a special education student planning to work with visually impaired children.
The Mary A. Spitler Scholarship was established for prospective early childhood students and is named in honor of the mother of Judy McKee.
PRESIDENT, PROVOST TO ADDRESS COE FALL FACULTY CONFERENCE
President William Shelton and Provost Ronald Collins are scheduled to address the COE Fall Faculty Conference on August 31. Other conference events include long-range planning and various NCATE visit related activities. The all-day meeting is at the Sheraton.
MERA GRADUATE STUDENT AWARDS AVAILABLE
The Michigan Educational Research Association has announced a new graduate student award program. Any graduate student is eligible to enter a reearch paper. There is a $100 first prize. In addition, the paper will be submitted to the AERA national conference; if it is selected, MERA will contribute up to $500 for travel and expenses.
Other applicants receiving favorable reviews will receive free registration for the MERA Winter Conference (Jan 14-15) in Novi.

November 1--deadline for manuscripts to Action in Teacher Education (ATE) on "Gender Equity Issues in Teaching and Teacher Education."
Deadline for application for sabbatical leave for following year.
November 6--deadline for submissions to AERA for Outstanding Book Award, Outstanding Contributions Relating Research to Practice, and the Cattell Early Career Award for Programmatic Research.
