FACULTY EXPRESS PREFERENCES ON GOALS FOR COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

At the COE Fall Faculty Conference, Marvin Pasch led the COE faculty in a goal-setting exercise.  Results have been tabulated and will be turned over to the Long-Range Planning Committee of the COE Council for further action.

Ranked at the top (3.975, 20 tables ranking in top 7) was "all teacher education students have structured, developmental field experiences throughout their program."

Others in the top seven were: "the program is built on a solid knowledge base constructed from recent and useful research findings" (3.792); "there has been an increased curriculum emphasis on the preparation of educators to work with the diverse student population in the schools" (3.692); "the college has a coherent and integrated program guided by a statement of common purpose"

(3.675); "there has been a substantial increase in the resources available to the college" (3.492); "every faculty member has a computer on his/her desk, networked together and to educators and data bases throughout the world"

(3.317); and "there is a newly constructed College of Education building built in response to the wishes of the college (3.108).

Bottom-ranked (among the 24 possibilities presented) were "the college is recognized as a leader in the application of state of the art technology" (2.167); "university bureaucratic controls were substantially reduced" (1.916); "the college has taken greater responsibility for the needs of EMU students who have disabilities"

(1.825); "two additional doctoral programs are in place" (1.475); "college units and/or administrative roles have been restructured and/or reorganized" (1.4); "alumni and friends of the college contribute at least $50,000 annually" (0.992); and "the teacher education program has been reduced to two-thirds of its former size" (0.792).

COE COUNCIL ADOPTS MISSION STATEMENT, OTHER ITEMS IN FIRST MEETING

With one amendment, the COE Council approved at its September 9 meeting a statement of mission for the COE first proposed by a "mission statement committee" in May 1991.  The statement reads:

The mission of the College of Education is to create an exemplary educational environment to develop the intellectual curiousity, creativity, critical and reflective thinking and problem solving abilities of its students so that they may become ethical, productive and contributing professionals and leaders in a democratic society.

In other action, the COE Council approved ten theme statements covering the advanced level preparation programs.  These are given elsewhere in this issue.

In organizational matters, the COE Council retains Sharon Pendleton as chair of the Instruction Committee and Gloria Neve as chair of the Personnel Committee.  A chair of the Finance Committee will be elected at the next meeting.  The group agreed to retain an ad hoc committee on the long-range plan, with membership to be named by the COE Council chair and to retain the ad hoc joint (with UCTE)  committee on the post-baccalaureate program with its current membership.  The calendar for meetings was adopted.

The group heard several reports and referred several items to the Instruction Committee for "work up."  It was agreed to discuss issues related to spring/summer calendars in November.  Discussion of enrollment management was retained on the agenda.

CHRISTINE PHELPS JOINS L&C FACULTY

Having just moved to Michigan from the Sonoran desert of Tucson, Arizona, Christine Phelps is adjusting to cooler temperatures, lush green grass, tall trees, cloudy days, rusty cars, and rainfall.  Born and raised on the shores of Lake Michigan in Racine, Wisconsin, in many ways the Ypsi area feels like home to her.

While in Tucson she participated in new activities such as rock climbing and hiking.  Highlight included hiking the Grand Canyon twice and "flashing" a 5.9 climb on Mt. Lemmon.

Other interests include early morning aerobics, long walks, occasional short runs, and tennis.  Phelps hopes to learn to cross-country ski and perhaps attempt winter camping in the U.P., preferably, she says, "during a mild weather spell."

An Iowa grad from WI, she will be cheering for the Hawkeyes, Brewers, and Packers this fall!

ABOUT PEOPLE

Tom Gwaltney was elected chair of the Friends of the One-Room Schoolhouse.

Olga Nelson directed a storytelling/cultural tour to Ireland this past summer.  Batt Burns, professional storyteller and one of Ireland's award-winning teachers, served as co-director.  His wife, Maura, an accomplished singer and concertina player, joined the group. Nelson plans to repeat the tour in 1994.  She is exploring a storytelling tour to Kenya and plans to take Swahili lessons this fall.

Betty Reisman has been appointed to the Michigan College Personnel Association executive board for '92-'93.
