PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION CATALOG SUPPLEMENTS DISTRIBUTED

Copies of the 1992 EMU Professional Education Supplement to the catalogs have been distributed to the full-time members of the professional education faculty and key offices on campus.  Additional copies will be available at a later time.

"This is an unusual document," according to Dean Jerry Robbins.  "However," he added, "numerous inconsistencies had crept into the existing catalogs which were bound to be baffling to an NCATE team."  In addition, many omissions were addressed and numerous changes in programs and policies were included.

Users of the catalog are encouraged to read the introductory material carefully.  Suspected irregularities found should be reported to Dr. Robbins.

UCTE MEETS TO ORGANIZE

There was not a quorum present for the September 17 meeting of the University Council on Teacher Education (UCTE).  Organizational matters were dealt with and reports were received on NCATE preparation, teacher testing, etc.  Several committees, to be appointed by the chair, were continued or established by general agreement.

RECOGNITIONS

Martha Tack has been named to the Board of Trustees for the University of Findlay (OH).

The Michigan United Conservation Club Hunter Safety Committee has named Ron Saunders to administer the Michigan Youth Hunter Education Challenge for 1992-93.  This event serves youth 12-19 to showcase shooting, orienteering, wildlife identification, and hunter responsibility.

The Port Huron Times Herald recently featured Meg Ehlendt, an HPERD student who is serving an internship as athletic trainer with the Port Huron high school teams, including JV and freshman football.

Donna Schmitt will present on "Empowering Women in Leadership" at the 6th annual Conference on Women in Educational Administration in Lincoln, NB on September 28.  She will also appear on a panel on "Women in the Educational Administration Professorship: Opportunities, Challenges, and Rewards." Schmitt will present on "Empowering Women in Leadership" on November 7 in Chicago at the 7th annual National Conference of Women School Executives.

Alison Harmon has had a proposal accepted on "School Improvement and the African-Centered Methodology (Infusing a Multicultural Perspective into Teacher Preparation and Classroom Curricula)" for the 1993 ATE convention in Los Angeles.  Others involved in that session will be Robbie Johnson, an EMU cooperating teacher, and an EMU student teacher.

Marvin Pasch and Robbie Johnson will join Jo-Ann Snyder of WSU in presenting "Reflections of Urban Education: A Tale of Three Cities, Chapter 2" at the ATE convention in February.

YVONNE L. CALLAWAY JOINS L&C FACULTY THIS FALL

Yvonne Callaway is single but lives close enough to Detroit to maintain her job as the family "go-for."  As a result, she spends many weekends on the road to and from Detroit.

She's a walker--on campus and in Ypsi during early morning hours.  New "morning" friends include Jan Collins-Eaglin and Maureen McCormack who have introduced Callaway to countless other faculty and staff and who also have contribued to Callaway's Ypsi sense of direction.  She also occasionally rides her bicycle in the evening.

Her most recent past life was as a resident of Illinois--right outside the "Windy City."  It seems that most of the time since completing her Ph.D. at WSU and leaving Detroit (in the spring of 1991) has been spent in relocation.

Consequently, learning new cities has become one of Callway's favorite activities.  Now that she's settled in Ypsilanti, let's hope she doesn't move again any time soon!

OPPORTUNITIES

Roy Weaver, associate dean of Teachers College at Ball State University, is soliciting EMU faculty to be members of the Renaissance Group Affinity Group on "Role Expectations of Faculty Involved in Teacher Education."

This Affinity Group will meet at Ball State on November 4-6.  As Weaver explains it, "our group focuses on research projects leading to presentations at national conferences."  Additional information is available in the dean's office or by calling Weaver at 317-285-5452 in Muncie, IN 47306-0580.

MORE OPPORTUNITIES

Honors undergraduate assistantships are available to give Honors Students the opportunity to acquire high-level skills by working as apprentices to EMU faculty.  If faculty would like to have such an assistant, contact Bill Miller, acting director, University Honors Program.

The EMU COE has been working with Detroit Public Schools in planning Professional Development Schools with an initial emphasis on the lower grades.  Support funds are expected to be available through the Michigan Partnership for New Education.  Interested faculty should contact Robbie Johnson for additional information.

Would you help with NCATE team visit logistics?  Martha Tack is organizing a committee to handle team transportation; she is also heading the effort to put together the exhibit room in Welch. Robbie Johnson and Pat Cavanaugh are putting together team hospitality activities and could use help; Kathy Quinn, Jim Riley, and Donna Schmitt could use help in assembling and preparing for display large groups of materials.  Please volunteer.
