DAIGNAULT LECTURED ON SERENITY AND TEACHING

Noted Quebecois educator and philosopher Jacques Daignault lectured on "Reflections on Serenity and Teaching" at a brown bag lunch on October 12.  The event was sponsored by the social foundations faculty of Teacher Education, the President's Commission on Blueprint 150, and the Collegium for Advanced Studies.

Professor Daignault's work draws on contemporary French philosophy (the work of Michel Serres and Gilles Deleuze in particular), as well as the earlier philosophy of Simone Weil.  His lecture explored "the relationship between a certain state of text and serenity as a necessary condition of pedagogy."

Professor Daignault has taught in the Department of Education at the Universite du Quebec a Rimouski since 1979.  He has also taught at the University of Paris and at Louisiana State University.

TEACHER TESTING TAKES NEW TWISTS

The complicated story of teacher testing in Michigan has taken some new twists in recent days.  The provisions of the original teacher testing bill remain in force.  Proposed amendments supported by a variety of parties, including the public teacher education institutions and the Michigan Department of Education (MDOE), have not passed the legislature and are not likely to pass in the near future.

MDOE had scheduled a test in elementary education to be given this month.  However, based on advice of the Attorney General, this test has been canceled.  Those who had registered for this test have been given an opportunity to change to a subject-field test.  As things stand now, all candidates for elementary certification must pass appropriate subject area tests.

Under current law, all persons in all teaching fields must have passed both the basic skills test and the appropriate subject field test(s) before doing student teaching.  For further information, contact Robbie Johnson.

CULTURAL ENCOUNTERS LECTURE

"The English, the French, and the Indians" is the topic of a free public lecture by Professor David Edmunds of Indiana University on October 17, 9-12, at the EMU Corporate Education Center.

WORKERS IN DEAN'S OFFICE BRING ROUTINES TO STANDSTILL
