FOUR NAMED AS EMERITUS FACULTY

Four recently-retired COE faculty with 115 years of service to EMU among them were awarded Emeritus Faculty status at a recent meeting of the EMU Board of Regents.

Calvin Michael, with 36 years of service; Jean Cione, with 29 years of service; Leon Neeb, with 26 years of service; and Gordon Belt, with 24 years of service, were the honorees.  Michael, Neeb, and Belt retired from the Department of Teacher Education; Cione retired from the Department of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.

ALUM NAMED TEACHER OF THE YEAR FOR WALLED LAKE SCHOOLS

Monday Report has learned, belatedly, that alum Charlene Harris was named 1991-92 "Teacher of the Year" for the Walled Lake schools.  Harris earned her bachelor's degree in special education.

Harris has taught in the Walled Lake schools for almost 20 years.  She is currently resource room teacher at Keith Elementary School.

NCATE OPEN MEETING WITH FACULTY  

The NCATE team invites all professional education faculty to meet at 3 p.m., November 10, Boone Hall.

AASCU SEEKS TEACHER EDUCATOR FOR 1-2 YEAR APPOINTMENT

To support the work of AASCU's President's Commission on Teacher Education, the Washington-based organization has created a 1-2 year position as Senior Associate for which it is seeking applications.

The individual selected will have primary responsibility for formulating and implementing AASCU's national agenda for the renewal of schools of education and their curricula.  Requirements include a doctorate and teacher education and K-12 experience.  Applications are due November 13, with the position available December 1.

INTERTEL FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES HOLLINGWORTH AWARD

The Hollingworth Award ($2000) is available to individuals and organizations which present proposals for publishable research projects concerning fifted and/or talented young people.  Application deadline is January 15.  Additional information is available from Dr. Roxanne Herrick Cramer, 4300 Sideburn Road, Fairfax, VA 22030-3507.

Criteria include significance of the study, adequacy of research design, and adequacy of presentation.

OERI ANNOUNCES FIELD-INITIATED RESEARCH GRANT PROGRAM

The U.S. Department of Education Office of Educational Research and Improvement has announced the Field-Initiated Studies research grant program.  The purpose of the program is to support field-initiated studies designed to advance educational theory and practice.

Examples of topics elibible include helping parents support the learning of their young children; improving the education of children whose circumstances put them at a disadvantage; identifying factors that lead to greater student learning; and identifying how school organization affects student achievement.

Applications must be postmarked by January 8.  Additional information is available from ORD.  Also see the Federal Register of September 21.

Based on the recommendations of the Spring Hill Conference, the training emphasis is to provide school psychologists who can meet the comprehensive psychological, educational, and mental health needs of a culturally diverse student population found in the public and private educational institutions of Michigan and the United States.  Emphasis is given toward direct and consultative services to students, parents, teachers, and administrators.  (covers specialist-level program in school psychology)
