UCTE BEGINS COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW OF INITIAL PREPARATION PROGRAM

At its meeting on November 19, the University Council on Teacher Education (UCTE) heard a report on the NCATE Board of Examiners exit interview from Jerry Robbins.

It also endorsed a proposal from the Department of Art that FA 317 Teaching of Art (2) be removed from the list of courses for which admission to the teacher education program is required.

The bulk of the meeting was devoted, as will be the forthcoming meeting on December 3, to committee work reviewing all aspects of the initial preparation program.  Background materials and a list of issues to be considered were provided to each committee.

Committee A is on General Education/Basic Studies for Prospective Teachers.  Mildred Lintner is chair and Mary Krieger is an additional member.

Committee B is on Specialty Studies/Major and Minor for Prospective Teachers.  Patricia Zimmer is chair.  Other committee members are Chris Bocklage, Jim Palasek, Jennifer Sharkey, and Rose Wingo.

Committee C is studying the Professional Studies for Prospective Teachers, with Kathleen Beauvais as chair.  Other committee members are Louise Patrick and Carla Tayeh.

Committee D is reviewing the State Subject Matter Test Content and EMU Curriculum, with John Novak, chair.  Other committee members are Jerry Jennings, Robbie Johnson, Steve Moyer, and Bonnie Wylo.

Some members of UCTE have not yet joined a committee for this work.

NSTA APPROVES REMAINING SCIENCE PROGRAMS

Dean Jerry Robbins has been notified by NCATE and the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) that the programs for preparing secondary teachers of chemistry and earth science have been found to be in compliance with mandatory NSTA guidelines.

A previous submission to NCATE/NSTA apparently was only partially reviewed, resulting in a lack of approval for these two fields.  The recent action and notification brings all EMU programs for the preparation of teachers of science into NCATE/NSTA compliance.
