HETRICK RECEIVES NCEA DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD

William Hetrick received the 1992 Distinguished Service Award from the National Community Education Association on December 3.  The award was made in ceremonies at the NCEA annual awards banquet at the Westin Hotel in Detroit.

GRANTS RECEIVED FROM THREE AGENCIES

Vista Maria awarded $7,733 for substance abuse awarenesss and group facilitator training for members of the organization's staff.  The training occurred earlier this year.  Patric Cavanaugh was the project director.

Loomis, Sayles & Company awarded $3,500 for a partnership model for delivering career counseling services.  Jane Goodman is the project director.  The project, which extends October through June, is designed to provide comprehensive career development services for Willow Run and "real world" career counseling training for graduate students in guidance and counseling. 

Rosella Bannister and the National Institute for Consumer Education received $2,500 from the National Futures Association for conducting a workshop last month in Illinois on "Teaching Financial Responsibility." 

EMU PERSONNEL PRESENT AT ASHA

At the recent meeting of the American Speech-Language Hearing Association in San Antonio, Kenneth Schatz, along with recent graduate Barbara Underwood, presented "SLI Students and AIDS: A survey of attitude and knowledge."

Carole Gorenflo and recent graduate Lara Scheidler-Smith presented "Phonological Intervention for Japanese Speakers: Effects of intelligibility and pragmatics."

OTHER RECOGNITIONS

Tom Gwaltney is listed among 1422 entries in the 1992 National Directory of Latin Americanists.

EMU's CSIP program with the Taylor school district, which won the 1986 Association of Teacher Educators Distinguished Program in

Teacher Education, is cited in the September-October 1992 issue of the Journal of Teacher Education.

The Urban Teacher Program, now dormant for lack of funding, is cited in the Renaissance Group's new publication Demonstration Projects.

Admissions to the teacher preparation program continue to climb: 618 admitted July-October, compared with 345 and 473 for the same period of the previous two years.   

UCTE SPENDS TIME ON COMMITTEE WORK

No business was scheduled for the December 3 meeting of the University Council on Teacher Education.  Committee work was continued from the previous meeting, with an examination of components of current initial preparation programs.

ETS ANNOUNCES OPPORTUNITIES FOR WORK IN THEIR OFFICES

Educational Testing Service of Princeton, NJ invites applications for the following:

1.  The 1993 Summer Program for Doctoral Students.  8 weeks, $2300 stipend, living allowance, travel allowance; assist in ongoing research projects.

2.  1993 Summer Internships in Program Direction (managing assessment programs).  8 weeks, $2300 stipend, living allowance, travel allowance; master's degree; work with assigned mentor.

3.  1993-94 Postdoctoral Fellowship Program.  10 months, $27,000 stipend, relocation expenses; conduct research with ETS staff.

4.  1993-94 National Assessment of Educational Progress Visiting Scholar Program.  10 months, salary at home institution, relocation expenses; study policy or measurement effects on minorities.

The development of special education professionals with the comprehensive knowledge, skills, and attitudes to deliver a continuum of habilitative/rehabilitative services to persons with special needs and to their families within a multicultural society.  (covers masters-level programs for teachers in special education. 

The school counselor as a caring professional whose focus is on the relationships needed to facilitate the development of students for effective living in a changing global society.  (covers masters-level program in school counseling)

Based on the recommendations of the Spring Hill Conference, the training emphasis is to provide school psychologists who can meet the comprehensive psychological, educational, and mental health needs of a culturally diverse student population found in the public and private educational institutions of Michigan and the United States.  Emphasis is given toward direct and consultative services to students, parents, teachers, and administrators.  (covers specialist-level program in school psychology)

The development of leaders with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes for helping to build learning communities within a culturally diverse society.  (covers masters-level programs in leadership; specialist-level programs in leadership; doctoral program in leadership)

The development of leaders in special education with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes for building quality services for persons with special needs and their families within a multicultural society.  (covers specialist-level programs for leaders/administrators in special education)
