COE FALL FACULTY CONFERENCE SCHEDULED FOR THURSDAY, AUGUST 26

The annual COE Fall Faculty Conference will be held on Thursday, August 26 at the Radisson-on-the-Lake in Ypsilanti.

Events will start at 8:00 a.m. with coffee and a "get (re)acquainted" activity led by Vic Chaisson.  Lunch will be included and the session will end around 3:00 p.m.

NICE SPONSORS TECHNOLOGY MEETING

The National Institute for Consumer Education (NICE) held an August 20 conference on campus on "New Technologies: Implications for Consumer Education."

Out-of-town attendees were from such places as New York, Washington DC, Detroit, Lansing, Troy, Chicago, and Texas.  They represented such entities as MasterCard, the U.S. Office of Consumer Affairs, Ford Motor, American Express, Kmart, AT&T, General Motors, the Federal Reserve, NBD, TRW, and the MI Department of Education.

MENTOR ANNOUNCED

In addition to those mentors for new faculty members previously announced, Myrna Yeakle will serve as the mentor for Joan Eckerson.

FACULTY NOTES

Due to a serious illness in his family, Bruce Crawford has requested a postponement of his appointment to the faculty of the Department of Teacher Education until January 1994.

Gary Banks presented "Legal Liability and the Youth Hockey Coach" on August 15 at a Program of Athletic Coaches Education (P.A.C.E.) workshop in Lakeland, MI.

ALUM AS DISTRICT TEACHER OF YEAR

Alum Traci Neill, 5th grade teacher at Loon Lake Elementary in Walled Lake, is the district's outgoing "teacher of the year."

STATE EVENTS OF INTEREST

The "Literacy, Society and School" conference will be held September 16-17, sponsored by the State Literacy Resource Center at CMU.  For information, call 517-774-7690.

The "Michigan Schools in the Middle--Teacher Preparation/Certification" conference for representatives of Michigan teacher education institutions will be held on September 23 in Mt. Pleasant.  R.S.V.P.'s are needed by September 8.  For information, call 517-774-6995.

MORE EVENTS OF INTEREST

The Society for Technology and Teacher Education's next meeting will be in Washington DC on March 16-19.  Presentation proposals must be received by October 2.  For information, call 804-973-3987 or send e-mail to AACE@Virginia.Edu.

COE/PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION PROGRAM STATS FOR 1991-92 RELEASED

Data recently released from EMU's Office of Institutional Analysis and Reporting for 1991-92 show that:

514 persons became eligible for recommendation for certification as an elementary teacher.  Men constituted 8% of this group and minorities constituted 4% of this group.

305 persons became eligible for recommendation for certification as a secondary teacher.  Men constituted 8% of this group and minorities constituted 5% of this group.

The number of persons eligible for K-12 and other certifications was not made available.

The mean age of a recipient of an undergraduate degree through the COE was 26.3, with means by program ranging from 24.1 to 28.8.  The mean EMU GPA was 3.10.

The mean age of a recipient of a graduate degree through the COE was 36.2, with means by program ranging from 30.3 to 38.4.  The mean EMU GPA was 3.68.

Bachelor's degrees through the COE have steadily increased from 354 in 1986-87 to 542 in 1991-92.

Graduate degrees through the COE has steadily increased (except for one year) from 450 in 1986-87 to 710 in 1991-92.
