SOUTH LYON DISTRICT COLLABORATIVE PROJECT
The South Lyon district is engaged in a school improvement program which is aimed at improving student outcomes. The focus of the three-year joint project with the EMU COE C-SIP (Collaborative School Improvement Program) is to bring about systemic change at the district and building levels.
Jim Berry serves as the EMU facilitator, working directly with the district to develop procedures, policies, staff development priorities, and organizational structures that can be replicated as a model for supporting district-wide organization change.
The faculty in Educational Leadership conducted an evaluation of the South Lyon district concerning systemic change. The baseline evaluation analyzed the following: systemic change in relation to the distribution of power in the organization; board-superintendent relationships; administrative psychological styles; school climate; internal and external communications; community involvement; and the relationship between school finance and systemic change. Feedback relative to each area was provided to the district in order to make short- and long-term plans related to the aforementioned areas.
During 1992-93, the Board used the data from the community survey in a decision regarding programmatic changes for the district. Other data were used to determine the staff development agenda for the 1993-94 school year.
District officials and board members and the Syracuse (NY) superintendent joined to present results of district experiences with systemic change.
