FACULTY NOTES
Provost Ronald Collins, Dean Barry Fish (Arts and Sciences), and Robbie Johnson represented EMU at a meeting of the Renaissance Group at Sam Houston State University in Texas this past week.
Later this week, Michael Bretting will be attending a meeting of the Michigan Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance in Traverse City. Robbie Johnson will travel to Atlanta as a member of the Planning Committee for the 1994 ATE Conference.
On Wednesday, November 17, Christina Jose-Kampfner leads a panel of Latino/Latina students as part of the EMU Women's Studies Week observance. (noon, Main Lounge, McKenny).
Representing NICE, Rosella Bannister recently participated in a distance-learning activity, "The Savings Zone." Two universities, 21 regional/state television organizations in 14 states, and 2598 teachers in 40 states, Canada, and Santa Domingo were part of the broadcast.
Georgea Langer will present "Using Group Work in College Teaching" as part of the FCIE series on November 10 (noon-2, 5th floor, REC/IM).
John Adams recently represented EMU at the NCAA annual meeting in Chicago. Adams is the faculty representative to NCAA.
Jane Goodman presented at the Michigan Counseling Association meeting on "Putting Punch in Your Presentations: Designing and Conducting Effective Workshops." Goodman also recently presented at the California Career Conference on "Career Development for Adults in Transition."
Rosella Bannister recently met in New York with Stephen Buckles, president of the National Council on Economic Education, to discuss possible joint projects between NCEE and NICE.
Robert Kreger and visiting lecturer Linda Kreger will present "Stages of Emotional Development" to the Washtenaw County Association for the Education of Young Children this month.
Linda Kreger recently taped a segment for WUOM radio on "Issues in Education." Topics covered included special and gifted education, home schooling, quality vs quantity, and homework. Earlier, she was interviewed by USA Today, the Detroit News, and the Ann Arbor News regarding developmental considerations and the Baby Jessica situation.
For the past seven months, Kreger was a weekly host of a radio show for WTKA, preparing current topics and answering call-in questions about child development and disorders. She is active in the Washtenaw Area Council for Children speaker's bureau.
Sue Stickel is editor of the Michigan Counseling Association Journal. She is also a member of the editorial board for the Elementary School Guidance Counselor Journal.
Jan Collins-Eaglin, Anne Bednar, Nancy Halmhuber, and Christine Phelps are Fellows in the EMU "Research on Teaching and Learning" project. They contributed to a study recently reported as "Students Perceive Less Emphasis on Learning and More on Grades Than Faculty Think They Do."
Representatives of American Express Company and the National Futures Association met in the NICE offices recently to discuss 1994 workshops for teachers across the country on "Consumer Approach to Investing" and "Privacy in an Information Age."
Lou Thayer is heading the L&C faculty and staff development campaign this year.
RECREATION ACCREDITATION TEAM VISITS THIS WEEK
Culminating many years of preparation, a visiting team will review HPERD's recreation programming this week, Monday through Thursday.
The team's activities start with a social event in McKenny on Monday evening. Tuesday and Wednesday activities include meetings with university administrators, recreation students and alumni, recreation advisory councils, and practicum supervisors; visiting classes; and touring facilities.
Exit interviews with Provost Ronald Collins, Associate Vice President Donald Bennion, Dean Jerry Robbins, and HPERD Head Michael Bretting will conclude the team's activities on Thursday.
Jean Folkerth has headed the preparation efforts for the accreditation visit.
SYMPOSIUM XIV SET
"Symposium XIV 1994," EMU's showcase for undergraduate creativity and research has been set for March 18. December 6 is the deadline for preliminary department nominations and January 28 is the date for final department nominations. Contact Dennis Beagen at 7-3130 for additional information. COE students are encouraged to participate.
ALUMNI NOTES
Judge Trudy DunCombe Archer, alum and former first grade teacher, will become the new First Lady of Detroit when her husband takes office as mayor of Detroit.
Mary Dean Barringer has been promoted to vice president for programs for the advancement of teaching at the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.
Thomas Fleming is pictured on p. 156 of the 1993 Britannica Book of the Year.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
The MI Department of Education is requesting nominations for faculty to participate in the development of new biology, history, psychology, and social studies tests for teacher certification.
Annual reports of the Professional Standards Commissions are available in COE department offices.
