FACULTY NOTES
James Riley attended the convention of the National Council of Teachers of English in Pittsburgh last week.
Gary Banks presented "Maximizing Your Liability Protection" at the MI AHPERD convention on November 13 in Traverse City.
Karen Paciorek recently spoke at the Ypsilanti District Library. A summary of her suggestions for "raising a reader" appeared in the November 20 Ypsilanti Press.
Georgea Langer is one of the Consortium Editors and Marvin Pasch and Beth VanVoorhees are members of the editorial board for Issues and Inquiry in College Learning and Teaching.
Jane Goodman and Yvonne Callaway were instrumental in organizing the "What's In It For Me? Developing Diversity in Counseling Leadership" conference held at EMU on November 15. The conference was supported by a grant from the MI Department of Education Office of Career and Technical Education and co-sponsored by EMU, WSU, MCDA, and MAMCD.
Claudia Wasik presented "Utilizing Images or Verbal Pictures in Teaching Tennis" on November 12 at the MI AHPERD convention in Traverse City.
John Gooden presented "A National Study of Alternative Certification for School Administrators" at the Southern Regional Conference on Educational Administration in Orlando during the SRCEA November 13-16 session. He was also a co-presenter for the graduate student dissertation workshop.
Jane Goodman and Sue Stickel organized a November 12 session for people interested in learning more about the state examination for school counselor endorsement. A number of members of the G&C faculty provided information during the session.
Jerry Robbins and Leah Adams attended a session sponsored by the Skillman Foundation of Detroit and held at the Yale Child Study Center in New Haven, CT last week. A number of representatives of the Detroit Public Schools were also present. This session was in connection with EMU's role as the "university partner" for the implementation of the "Comer Model" in selected Detroit elementary schools.
Claudia Wasik attended the Golf Summit Conference held at the Corporate Education Center on November 7.
An article by Georgea Langer, Marvin Pasch, Alane Starko, et al.; an article by Marvin Pasch et al.; an article by several including Georgea Langer; and Jaime Grinberg's master's thesis constituted the bulk of the "analytical framework" in an article by Short and Rinehart in the November issue of Educational Administration Quarterly.
Jennifer Beller presented a workshop on "Ethics in Athletics: Your Role as Athletic Director and Coach" to the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics at the NAIA convention in Atlanta in September.
Beller (with S.K. Stoll) presented "A Praxeological Assessment of the Need for Reform in U.S. Intercollegiate Sport Through Moral Education" and "Distributive Justice Relative to Gender Equity: A Praxeological Assessment of the Status Quo Argument in College Athletics on the Scarcity of Goods" at the Philosophic Society for the Study of Sport convention in Fort Worth in October.
Beller spoke on "Sport Ethics" to student athletes at the University of Dallas in October.
Beller presented a workshop on "The SBH* Maieutic Standard: How to Teach Moral Education" to the U.S. Air Force Academy Air Officer Command in Denver in October.
Representatives from academic departments at Hope College heard Beller speak on "How to Teach Ethics Throughout the Curriculum" on October 26. Beller has also worked as a consultant to the Department of Business at that college.
Earlier this month, Beller presented "Whose Values Anyway: Your Role as Administrator and Coach" at the MI AHPERD convention in Traverse City.
BBC-TV from Manchester, England interviewed Beller concerning moral reasoning in athletics for a program to be aired in England in January.
ALUMNI NOTES
Franklin J. Helle, a program aide in an alternative school for at-risk students in Fowlerville, coaches the Fowlerville chess team. He teaches chess to gifted students in Livingston County and coaches a chess program at the Jewish Community Center in Ann Arbor.
STUDENT NOTES
The EMU chapter of Kappa Delta Pi initiated considerably more than 125 new members in ceremonies held on November 21. Michael Wolfe, KDP Executive Director, West Lafayette, IN was the speaker for the event. Thomas Gwaltney is the counselor for the local KDP chapter.
UCTE MET ON NOVEMBER 4
The University Council on Teacher Education met on November 4. A proposal to request permission to offer marketing education as a separate endorsement area was approved.
IDE MEETS ON MONDAY
The local chapter of the Institute for Democracy in Education will meet at Bach Elementary on November 22, 7-8:30. Contact Jaime Grinberg for additional information.
