ALUM ANITA CLARK WINS $25,000 MILKEN TEACHING AWARD

Anita M. Clark, a teacher at Marshall (MI) High School and an EMU alum, is the recipient of the 1992 Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award.  The award carries a cash prize of $25,000 and professional development opportunities.

Ms. Clark was one of six teachers in Michigan and 120 teachers from 20 states recognized this year.

ALUM THOMAS FLEMING FEATURED IN EBONY ISSUE

Thomas Fleming, EMU alum and 1992 National Teacher of the Year, is featured in the December 1992 issue of Ebony, pp. 68-70.  Reference to his special education degree from EMU is included in the article.

RECENT GRAD MARVIN SMITH FEATURED IN FLINT JOURNAL ARTICLE

Marvin Smith, a December 1992 graduate in special education, was featured in the December 17 issue of the Flint Journal.  Smith is a former school custodian.

JOSE-KAMPFNER RECEIVES GRANT, LOCAL RECOGNITIONS

Christine Jose-Kampfner is the recipient of a $10,000 grant from the Michigan Department of Labor and the Michigan Community Service Commission.  This grant is to support work of "Youth Helping Youth" in southwest Detroit. 

Jose-Kampfner is involved in several projects involving Detroit-area Hispanic youth and families. 

She has also been recognized in several local-area publications for her coordination of the "Kids Need Moms" program.  This program enables children of mothers in the Washtenaw County Jail to spend 2 1/2 hours one Saturday morning each month with their mothers.  Volunteer help--primarily college students--provides transportation for the children.  Church groups recently helped with presents of clothing for the children. 

MARY JANE AND ED MCEACHERN SCHOLARSHIP ESTABLISHED

Mary Jane and Ed McEachern, both COE alums, have established a scholarship for an Ypsilanti High graduate who is preparing to become an elementary teacher.  Mr. McEachern is a prominent local business person (Print and Copy) and Mrs. McEachern is a local-area teacher.

SOME FACULTY PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES

Georgea Sparks-Langer is a candidate for Secretary of Division K (Teacher Education) of the American Educational Research Association.  Division K members are urged to submit completed AERA ballots.

Sarah Huyvaert recently presented at a meeting of the National Education Commission on Time and Learning.  President William Shelton (who is teaching in the Department of Leadership and Counseling this semester) is a member of the Commission.  The Commission plans a meeting in Ypsilanti on April 29-30.

Linda Kreger, lecturer, recently presented "Art as a Curricular Priority" at the Michigan Art Education Association's annual conference in Dearborn.

Marge Chamberlain is vice-president of the EMU AAUP chapter, with Nora Martin and Judy Williston as at-large members of the executive committee.  Ron Hoodin has been named to the negotiations team.

POT-BELLIED STOVE FOR SCHOOL HOUSE COMES FROM GEORGIA

A pot-bellied stove for EMU's One Room School House was donated by Christopher Sharpe, retired dean of the Division of Education at North Georgia College.  Sharpe visited the School House this past summer and offered the donation if some one would come to Georgia for the stove.  Thomas Gwaltney made a trip to Georgia over the holidays in his van and brought the stove back.

The COE is the first of EMU's colleges featured in Alumni Action.

EMU'S FIRST DOCTORAL STUDENTS COMPLETE QUALIFYING EXAMINATIONS

Joanelle Long, Kathryn Malnar, Sherrill Pryor, Norma Ross, and Joan Tucker have passed the leadership doctoral program comprehensive qualifying examinations.

HOLIDAY VIGNETTES

The exterior of Boone Hall was serenaded one holiday evening.  Carolers were found to be former dean Scott Westerman and his wife, son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren.  (Boone Hall needs all the attention it can get!)

Telling the boss to go to Hell is one thing, but taking him there is another.  Jerry Robbins was taken to the Radisson on a pretext, then put in stretch limo.  Other occupants of the limo included COE associate deans and department heads.  The mystery ride, complete with appropriate holiday beverages, gifts, and poetry, was indeed to Hell, MI, followed by a trip to and dinner in Chelsea.

Pat Cavanaugh received a copy of the 1993 Curmudgeon Calendar.  Certain e-mail users have received a daily curmudgeonly statement from Cavanaugh--some of which he has attributed to other people.

OPPORTUNITIES

"Reaching Those Who Teach Teachers: Defining the Core of Constitutionalism, Citizenship, and Civic Education" is a summer institute designed to enhance teaching of certain social studies topics to college students who will become teachers.

The institute of a project of the American Political Science Association and the University of Tulsa, supported by an NEH grant.  It will be held from July 13-July 5 at the University of Tulsa.  Participants will receive funds for travel, living expenses, and a stipend of $1,125.

Applications are sought from teams of college faculty that include a social studies education professor and either a historian or political scientist at the same institution.

  The Annenberg/CPB Math and Science Project guidelines include four initiatives:  (1) a database of visual examples of science teaching for elementary school professional development; (2) on-line services for rural teachers who use telecomputing to improve math/science teaching; (3) strengthening public communication about math and/or science reform; and (4) strategies for sharing information about math/science reform activities.  Deadline for initiatives (1) and (2), June 8; for initiatives (3) and (4), April 1.  Information:  Annenberg/CPB Math and Science Project, 901 E Street, NW, Washington, DC 2004. CATE LAB ATTRACTS VISITORS, PROVIDES SERVICES

Special Education's CATE (Center for Adaptive Technology Education) Lab attracted a number of visitors during the fall semester.  These tours/demonstrations/presentations were given by Lynne Rocklage and other faculty members to:

Plymouth/Canton school personnel, ERIM staff, state Department of Education personnel; EMU's OT faculty, Division of Student Affairs personnel, and Deans Advisory Council;  Albion College personnel; University of Michigan Office of Disabled Students personnel; NCATE Board of Examiners team; an open house.

A variety of classes in special education and OT have used the lab.  The lab was used to assist EMU students and staff who have disabilities.  Use/consultation has also been made by area professionals and K-12 students.

Presentations concerning the lab and its services have been made on WEMU and to area professional or-ganizations.  The lab is also the basis of a research project involved with teaching technology skills to prospective teachers.
