PRESIDENT'S FORUM ON FACILITIES FOR COE ON WEDNESDAY

President William Shelton is conducting an open forum on Wednesday, February 3, 3:00 p.m., 201 Welch.  This forum will consist of an update on EMU's request for state funding for an Education building and library.

Also participating in the open meeting will be Provost Collins and Deans Robbins and Boone.  COE faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to attend.

"I expect the president to announce something very positive for the College of Education," said Jerry Robbins.  "I have reason to believe that a very creative package for funding has been assembled," he added.

At the discretion of the department/unit head, COE offices may close in order to permit staff to attend the event.

Several years ago, with substantial input from a COE faculty committee, COE space needs were identified as consisting of about 90,000 square feet of assignable space (about 122,500 total square feet) allocated in certain ways.  (A summary is on pp. 267-270 of the NCATE Institutional Report.)

The plans would permit all of the Department of Teacher Education to be housed in the same building and would provide space "relief" for both Special Education and HPERD.  In addition, funds for upgrading of both Rackham and Warner have been requested to be included in the funding package, under the planning assumption that much of Special Education would remain in Rackham and much of HPERD would remain in Warner.

President Shelton, who is teaching this semester in Boone Hall, is scheduled for a detailed tour of Boone Hall in mid-day Wednesday.

The Department of Teacher Education is hosting a conference for part-time faculty in the department at EMU's Corporate Education Center on Friday morning, February 5.  This event is modeled, in part, on a similar event held in recent times by the Department of Leadership and Counseling.

FACULTY NOTES

Marvin Pasch and Robbie Johnson, along with Suzanne Pasch of UW-Milwaukee; Steven Ilmer, JoAnne Snyder, and Ella Stapleton of Wayne State; and Awilda Hamilton and Paul Mooradian of Kent State are the authors of chapter 1 "Reflections of Urban Education: A Tale of Three Cities" in a book recently released.

The research reported in this chapter is the result of an ongoing collaborative effort of a consortium of urban teacher educators from metropolitan Cleveland, Detroit, and Milwaukee.  Portions of the research had previously been reported at an ATE meeting.

YPSILANTI SCHOOLS FINANCIAL WOES BRING CHANGES TO COUNSELING PROGRAM

In December, a formal agreement was signed with the Ypsilanti schools such that the counseling program would provide services to the students of the Kingston Opportunity Center.  However, recent financial developments in the school system have necessitated the closing of the Kingston Opportunity Center.

The counseling program has now offered its services to students, faculty, and staff of the Ypsilanti schools who may be affected by mid-year changes that are happening in the schools.  Interested parties may call 487-0255 for an evening or Saturday appointment with a counseling intern.
