POLAKOW PUBLISHES LIVES ON THE EDGE WITH UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO PRESS

The University of Chicago Press has just released Valerie Polakow's book Lives on the Edge, subtitled "Single Mothers and Their Children in the Other America."

One in five children and one in two single mothers live in destitution today.  Why then, Polakow asks, is poverty seen as a private affair?

Paulo Freire said, "One of Valerie Polakow's basic characteristics is that she never declines to interpose herself in the permanent search of overcoming her own self....  Lives on the Edge [is] a powerful and revealing book, by which reading we are moved and, moreover, mobilized."
