ATE CONVENTION FEATURES EMU ASSOCIATED PERSONS PROMINENTLY

At the recent Association of Teacher Educators (ATE) convention in Los Angeles, EMU-affiliated persons were prominent in various aspects of the programming.

Program items included:  "Does Quality Teacher Education Make a Difference?: One Institution's Response to That and Other Questions," by Marvin Pasch, Georgea Sparks-Langer, and Amy Colton (Ann Arbor schools).

"Reflections of Urban Education: A Tale of Three Cities," by Suzanne Pasch (UW-Milwaukee), Marvin Pasch, Robbie Johnson, Steven Ilmer (WSU), JoAnn Snyder (WSU), Ella Stapleton (WSU), Awilda Hamilton (Kent State), and Paul Mooradian (Kent State).

The same persons presented "Reflections of Urban Education: A Tale of Three Cities, Chapter 2."

"School Improvement and the African-Centered Methodology" by Alison J. Harmon, Robbie Johnson, Clora Johnson (a student teacher at the time this project was conducted), Maureen McCormack, Cheryl Howard (a teacher at Duffield Elementary), Gwen Mitchell (principal of Duffield Elementary), and Cecily McClellan (a teacher at Duffield Elementary).  Nora Martin and Barb Gorenflo were session presiders.  Robbie Johnson was actively involved in the work of the 1994 conference planning committee.  Jerry Robbins participated in NCATE-related sessions and in meetings of the Commission on Quality Standards and Teacher Education.

Convention materials recognized EMU as the 1991 winner of the Distinguished Program in Teacher Education award and Jerry Robbins as a 1988 recipient of the President's Award for Service.

HPERD FACULTY, STUDENTS ACTIVELY PARTICIPATED IN MID-WEST AHPERD CONFERENCE IN TOLEDO

At the recent Mid-West Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance convention in Toledo, Eddie Bedford and Erik Pedersen presented "International Games for Upper Elementary Children," Steve Moyer presented "Learning Cues for Elementary Physical Education," and Eddie Bedford presented "Boredom Breakers."

Terry Rupert presented an abstract of his research on "Comparing Pedagogical Behaviors of Teachers/Coaches in Physical Education and Athletics."  Erik Pedersen presented an abstract of his research on "Results of a Ten-Year Study on How the Changing Demographic Profile of College Students Has Affected the General Physical Education Activity Program."

Pedersen's sport artifact collection was displayed during the conference.

Students Matt Gresell, Frank Anthonis, Brad Booth, Mike Huber, and Lorraine Meloche made international game presentations.  Huber, Booth, Gresell, and Meloche also served as session presiders during the conference.

Booth was elected as the student representative to the board of the Mid-West organization. 

FACULTY NOTES

Doris Komblevitz, EMU's director of state/federal/community relations, served as a guest lecturer in EDL 613.  She spoke on the ways that governments influence higher education.

John Pappas is serving as the president of the Michigan Association for Adult Development and Aging.  Jane Goodman is chair of the Professional Development Institute committee.  John Waidley is newsletter editor and chair of the editorial committee.

Bill Hetrick has had accepted his paper "Leadership for a Time of Change" for the second annual conference on "Creating the Quality School," sponsored by the University of Oklahoma, to be held next month.

Jerry Robbins recently paid an official NCATE chair previsit to East Central University in Oklahoma.

Frederica C. Frost, William A. Pearson, and Sandra T. Robinson were recently appointed as Provisional Part-Time Graduate Faculty.

ALUM AWARDED NEW ENGLAND HONOR

Alum Marilyn Harris, Assistant Superintendent of Schools in Methuen, Massachusetts, recently was recognized for outstanding leadership by the New England Coalition of Educational Leaders.  Harris is a former special education teacher.

STUDENTS RECEIVE RECOGNITIONS

Student teacher Paul Eibler was featured in an article in the Pinckney High School "Connection" section of the Brighton Argus.  Eibler is on leave from his full-time job with Malloy Lithographing in Ann Arbor to do student teaching.  Eibler's father was formerly director of student teaching at UM.

Graduate student Jacqueline Simon reviewed When I am an Old Woman I Shall Wear Purple for the MAADA "Times."

Graduate student Susan Judkins and graduate assistant Barb Karvonen won free registrations to the Michigan Employment Counselor's Association conference.  Several other graduate students also attended.
