BARNARD BEQUEST ENRICHES COE ENDOWMENT, PROVIDES SCHOLARSHIP
Through a bequest from the estate of Mrs. Esther Marie Walker Barnard, the COE endowment fund has been enriched in the amount of $10,000. Mrs. Barnard's estate has also provided for a scholarship endowment of $35,000.
The scholarship has been designated for a minority student who is a prospective teacher, according to Jerry Robbins. The first award of the Barnard Scholarship is scheduled for approximately one year from now, he added.
Mrs. Barnard graduated from Michigan State Normal College in 1927. The two areas which interested her most were education and history. Mrs. Barnard died on January 15, 1993. She was a widow who lived at the Glacier Hills Retirement Center at the time of her death.
HETRICK RECOGNIZED BY EMU BOARD OF REGENTS
William Hetrick was recognized by the EMU Board of Regents at its recent meeting with a resolution of commendation. In addition to his numerous other contributions to EMU, including his leadership in the doctoral program, Hetrick was cited for his receipt of the 1992 national Community Education Association Distinguished Service Award.
COE UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN SYMPOSIUM XIII
Several COE undergraduate students presented papers during Symposium XIII, the College of Arts and Sciences' annual event for undergraduate research and creativity.
Craig Voll presented "Performance Enhancing Techniques in Sports and Their Application to Everyday Life." Voll's sponsor was Jack Sheard.Yvonne Callaway was the sponsor for "Women and Children: The Story of Abuse." Students Jennifer Caughey, Lisa Hively, Wendy Polkey, and Susan Stoff prepared and presented the paper.
From outside the COE, teaching-related papers were presented by Marlene Aldea ("Hands-On Mathematics vs. Dittos"), Deborah Butske ("Fractals"), Robinette Giner ("Number Sense in Young Children"), Jennifer Shucard ("A Humanistic Approach to Art Education: A Sense of Connection"), Lisa Ferrante ("Chaos in High School Science"), and Shannon Murphy ("Communication, Culture, and the Elementary Classroom").
KEAL FELLOWSHIPS AWARDED TO COE WOMEN FACULTY
Jennifer Beller, Lynne Rocklege, and Georgea Sparks-Langer are each recipients of a 1993 Josephine Nevis Keal Professional Development Fellowship. The Keal endowment provides support for fellowships for deserving women faculty members.
FACULTY NOTES
Sue Stickel and Jane Goodman presented a workshop on "Working: A Partnership Model for Delivering Career Counseling Services" at the American Counseling Association convention in Atlanta.
"Reflections from the Inside: Women's Health in Prison" by Christina Jose-Kampfner appeared in the Winter 1992 Health/PAC Bulletin.
Jerry Robbins is at East Central University in OK this week, chairing an NCATE visit to that institution. He recently spoke to the YES groups at Port Huron H.S. and Port Huron Norther H.S.
WELLS RECEIVES SPIRIT AWARD
Wendy Wells, a prospective elementary teacher from Petersburg, was one of three EMU students recently receiving the General Motors 1992-93 Volunteer Spirit Award.
GRADUATE ASSISTANT AWARD COMPETITION ANNOUNCED
All COE faculty recently received notice of the annual competition for a '93-'94 graduate assistant. Applications are due May 5. For additional information, contact Donna Schmitt. Awards go for support of graduate assistants who are to be used in connection with research projects.
COE COUNCIL MEETS; ACTS ON SEVERAL ITEMS
The COE Council met on March 24. Referred to the COE Instruction Committee for "workup" and report were a proposed new CTA 511 "Readings in Interracial/Interethnic Communication," proposed revisions to the Production/Operations Management undergraduate major, and revisions to the graduate music degree programs.
Phyllis Noda of Foreign Languages and Bilingual Studies presented a proposal concerning intercultural/translingual studies. The COE Council approved the concept of seeking state approval of an endorsement area in this field and approved, should state approval be granted, a set of policies and a curriculum for the endorsement area.
Reports were received from the COE Finance Committee and concerning Graduate School matters.
The Council agreed that the three forthcoming vacancies from the COE to the Graduate Council should be filled by one person each from Teacher Education, L&C, and Special Education. Election of these persons by the COE Council will be at a later time.
There was discussion of the proposed revisions of the COE Council governing document.
The Council approved changes in the admission requirements for the community counseling program.

The Office of Campus Life has issued a "call for ideas" for the 1993-94 Lecture Series. Suggestions go to Laura Edwards or Shelley Wilson at 7-3045.
The U.S. Information Agency is inviting applications for projects that will serve as an avenue for community participation in problem-solving and improving professional development in Central and Eastern Europe. Activities may include study tours, U.S.-based internships, and materials development. Deadline is April 16. Contact Barbara Richardson in ORD for information.
GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIP AVAILABLE

ONE-ROOM SCHOOLHOUSE CONFERENCE SET
The inaugural state-wide Michigan One-Room Schoolhouse Conference will be held at EMU, co-sponsored by the COE and the Historical Society of Michigan, on May 14. Scott Westerman gives the keynote address.

Based on the recommendations of the Spring Hill Conference, the training emphasis is to provide school psychologists who can meet the comprehensive psychological, educational, and mental health needs of a culturally diverse student population found in the public and private educational institutions of Michigan and the United States.
