TACK PRODUCES FACULTY JOB SATISFACTION: WOMEN AND MINORITIES IN PERIL

Faculty Job Satisfaction: Women and Minorities in Peril, by Martha W. Tack and Carol L. Patitu (Miami U, Ohio) has recently been released.  This work is Report Four of the 1992 ASHE-ERIC Higher Education Reports, published by George Washington University.

Tack and Patitu discuss the coming shortage of higher education faculty, with emphasis on the roles of women and minorities as this shortage develops.  Stressors and satisfiers in the work place are discussed, again with emphasis on differences related to women and minorities.

COLTON AND SPARKS-LANGER HAVE MAJOR ITEM ON "REFLECTION" IN JTE

Amy Bernstein Colton (National Board for Teaching Standards) and Georgea Sparks-Langer are represented in the Jan.-Feb. 1993 issue of the Journal of Teacher Education with their "Conceptual Framework to Guide the Development of Teacher Reflection and Decision Making."

Continuing a line of research begun some years ago and reported on frequently in major outlets, Sparks-Langer and Colton synthesize the work of other researchers and provide EMU and Ann Arbor Schools examples.

IN THE MEDIA

It's not often that an EMU COE faculty member's work makes the Chronicle of Higher Education, but in the March 31 issue, the work of Jennifer M. Beller and Sharon Kay Stoll (U of Idaho) is reported.

In a survey of 13,000 high school and college students, Stoll and Beller have found that "athletes were more likely than non-athletes to make moral decisions based on what other people told them, or what felt good, rather than on how other people might be affected and on their responsibility to society."

Who Says It Is Cheating: Anybody's Guide to Sport Ethics by Stoll, Beller, et al., has recently been released.

Lives on the Edge, by Valerie Polakow, was the subject of the lead article in the "Connection" section of the April 4 Ann Arbor News.  Polakow's recent book is published by the U of Chicago Press.

FACULTY NOTES

James Robert Palasek was the keynote speaker at March 28 ceremonies of the EMU chapter of Golden Key National Honor Society.  Palasek is an honorary member of the chapter, as is Tom Bushey.

Gloria Neve represented the MI AHPERD at the recent respresentative assembly of the AAHPERD in Washington.  Neve also participated in a parade that advocated the inclusion of health and physical education in the core curriculum.  She also spent time "on the hill" with members of the state congressional delegation in a related lobbying effort.

Over 6000 persons attended the recent conference of the MI Association for the Education of Young Children in Grand Rapids, including a number of EMU students and alums.  Karen Paciorek was Conference Committee Chair.  Presenters included Judy Williston, Karen Paciorek, and Leah Adams.  Adams was elected chair of the SIG for Teacher Education.

Jennifer Beller was a presenter at the AAHPERD convention in Washington in a workshop on "Tips and Tricks for Teaching Critical Thinking: Process to Practice."  She also presented (with S.K. Stoll) on "Effect of a Longitudinal Teaching Methodological and Classroom Environment on Both Cognitive and Behavioral Moral Development."  Beller also presented on "Ethics and Sport: Oxymoron or Reality."

SECONDARY MATHEMATICS PROGRAM APPROVED BY NCTM AND NCATE

NCATE has recently informed the COE that the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics has found the teaching major in mathematics for secondary teachers to be in compliance with NCTM standards.

Remaining programs not in compliance with professional association guidelines include elementary education, physical education, and school psychology.

ALUMS DO WELL IN MILKEN AWARDS

Recent issues of several professional journals have included full-page ads announcing the names of the 120 1993 Milken Family Foundation National Educator Awards.  In addition to other benefits, the award carries a $25,000 prize.  At least two (Anita Clark, Tom Fleming) of the 1993 awardees are EMU alums.
