COE ALUM THOMAS FLEMING AWARDED HONORARY DOCTORATE; IS COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER
COE alum Thomas Fleming, a WISD teacher and 1992 national Teacher of the Year, was awarded an honorary doctor of education degree by EMU in ceremonies at EMU's commencement exercises on April 25. Fleming also served as the commencement speaker.
The citation for Fleming included "by being recognized as the national Teacher of the Year, you have earned the respect and admiration of countless individuals in the field of education. You are to be commended for your dedication to your profession and to the young people whose lives you have touched. By demonstrating how education has changed your life, you have brought hope and a vision for the future to students across the nation."
Lawrence Geffen, retiring professor in Special Education, was the commencement Grand Marshall for the 2:15 event.
ALUMS IN THE NEWS
Regina Mulligan, earth science teacher at South Middle School, Belleville, won the 1993 "Can-Doer Award" from the Michigan Technology Council. Ingrid Sheldon was recently installed as Ann Arbor mayor.
COFFEE WITH THE DEAN
"Coffee with the Dean" sessions are scheduled for April 29, 8:30-9:15 in Boone, noon to 12:45 in Rackham, and 3:30-4:15 in Warner. All sessions are held in lounge areas and are open, without agenda, to staff, faculty, and students.
WITH THE STUDENT TEACHERS
Kelly Adams recently completed a student teaching assignment in first grade in the American School in London.
Julie Helber, whose student teaching was at Paddock Elementary School, was named as "Runner-Up" in the annual MATE "Student Teacher of the Year" competition. Helber's cooperating teacher was Dan Adams and her EMU supervisor was Kathy Ashton-Miller.
In the same competition, Maria Manning and Susan Wescott were named as two of the four semi-finalists. Manning did her student teaching in Silverton, CO under Lena Gibson. Wescott's cooperating teacher was Barb Ley of Houghton Elementary, Saline and her EMU supervisor was Kathy Ashton-Miller.
Matricia Larkey, student teacher, Fischer Elementary, Wayne-Westland, was an "honorable mention," under Carole Pawloski, cooperating teacher and Tina Tolin, EMU supervisor.
GREMLINS
Every news agency has its gremlins, from the NY Times to Monday Report. An article in last week's issue contained an unforgivable error, for which MR's society editor and copy editor have been severely chastised. The article as it should have appeared is given below.
GEFFEN AND RUPP HONORED WITH RETIREMENT PARTY
A large group of faculty, students, families, and friends attended a retirement party for Lawrence Geffen and Ralph Rupp sponsored by the Department of Special Education and held April 16 at the Huron Golf Clubhouse. Tributes to the work of both men were given, along with a variety of gifts. Both will be strongly missed as part of the COE community.

BECOMING SOMEBODY CALLED "STIMULATING"
Becoming Somebody: Towards a Social Psychology of School by Philip Exler, with the assistance of Warren Chrichlow, June Kern, and Rebecca Martusewicz (Falmer, 1992) was reviewed in the March 1993 issue of Educational Researcher, with a summary comment of "stimulating."
LINDA NOEL DIES
Linda Noel, Wyandotte junior, and a prospective early childhood/elementary teacher, died recently at UM Hospital. Our sympathy goes to family and friends.
ALUM ELLEN EWING NAMED SALINE SUPERINTENDENT
The number of women superintendents in Michigan will go up as of July 1, as COE alum Ellen Ewing assumes the post in Saline. She is currently serving as acting superintendent.
THE REST OF THE NEWS THAT FITS
An EMU committee has been named, with COE representation, to interview and recommend an architectural firm for all aspects of the Education Building/Library/Physical Plant project for which the state has allocated $51+ million.

The April 22-23 Minority Teachers Conference in Lansing was canceled at the last minute. We hope all parties planning to attend got the word on time.
COE CELEBRATION OF EXCELLENCE! DRAWS CROWDS AT THREE SESSIONS
The second annual COE Celebration of Excellence! was held in three segments on April 21 at the Town Hall Schoolhouse. Jerry Robbins spoke briefly at each session.
Lynette Findley and Pander Kimbrough of EMU's Equity Office were recognized as the "Supportive EMU Office of the Year." Dean Rockwell, for his work with the former One-Room Schoolhouse Committee, and Judy Williston, as the curator for the Schoolhouse, were recognized as the "Supportive Volunteers of the Year."
The estates of several persons, along with Gwin E. Ferrington and Mr. and Mrs. Ed McEachern, were recognized as "Donors of the Year."
Outstanding Alumni recognitions were made to Elizabeth Asmann, Timothy Dyer, and Roy Wilbanks.
"Friends" recognitions were made to John Knapp, Tom Bushey, John Bayerl, Charles Duerr, Jr., Thomas Fournier, Marlene Gonet, Beverly Harris, Gerald Kratz, Dennis Lampron, Terrel LeCesne, Thomas MacKenzie, Art McCafferty, Paul McKelvey, Duane Moore, James Newman, Betty Reisman, James Ryan, Bill Weber, and Youssef Yomtoob.

Staff members Norma Taylor-Bishop and Arbra Hamilton were recognized for 10+ years of service to the COE. Carole Zakrzewski, Kerry Farah, Doris Guy, Diana Harding, and Kathleen Kootsillas were recognized for five or more years of service to the COE.
Recognized for a 4.00 GPA were 243 graduate students. Recognition was given to 21 prospective teachers graduating this year through the Honors Program. Prospective teachers in the Honors Program with a 3.5+ GPA accounted for 93 recognitions made. One hundred ninety six student teachers with a 3.5+ GPA were recognized.
Recipients of major scholarships/assistantships/awards were recognized. These included Margaret August, Kurt Bartell, Kim Butcher, Andrea Hill, Lorraine Meloche, Heather O'Neal, Cheryl Spencer, Craig Voll, Maria Wentz, Karl Wolfe, Joan Tucker, Tamara Helsom, Marsha Isenhoff, Rebecca Guilfoyle, Anjail Abdullah, David Berney, Jennifer Bilbie, Denise Gildo, Manya Grover, Kadeejah Ingram, Gail Joslin, Lori Larrick, Michele McDonald, Russel Robinson, and Wendy Smith.
Other groups recognized included the Emeritus Faculty of the College of Education, the members of a variety of advisory committees, and leaders of COE-affiliated student organizations.
Special tribute went--and goes--to the Physical Plant employees who care for the COE buildings: Charlie Childers, Dan Cornelison, Anthony Grant, Larry Leonard, Sherri Moore, Ruth Runyan, Terellis Stinnette, Glen Strebere, and Clark Williams.
OPPORTUNITIES
The Michigan Association of Colleges for Teacher Education will hold its conference on "Redefining Educator Preparation for a Changing World of Teaching and Learning" at the University Club at MSU on May 6, beginning at 8:30 a.m. EMU's institutional membership in MACTE makes all faculty eligible to attend MCATE events.
June 1 is the deadline date for manuscripts to The Educational Forum for the theme issue on "alternative certification" and October 1 is the deadline date for manuscripts for the theme issue on "alternative schooling."
August 16 is the deadline date for papers for the Southern Regional Council on Educational Administration meeting (Orlando, Nov. 13-16) on "Visions of the Future: Impacting the Direction of Educational Leadership."
Pre-applications for grants to create and produce television programs specifically directed at developing fundamental intellectual skills for children are due May 5. Contact Barbara Richardson, ORD.
