COE STUDENTS PROMINENT IN FACILITATED COMMUNICATION PRESENTATIONS
Sandra McClennen and five of her students have had presentations accepted for "Getting the Words Out: Facilitated Communication and Inclusion," the second national conference on facilitated communication (FC) to be held in Syracuse, NY on May 17-18.
McClennen and graduate research assistant Jennifer Sharkey will present (with two SLP's from community mental health agencies) "No Matter Where, No Matter How, It's Important to Get Started: Bringing FC to Clients of Both Rural and Urban Community Mental Health Agencies."
Honors undergraduate assistant Bindu Venkatram, graduate student Tracy Strunk, and undergraduate student Terri Billmaier will present "Inclusion and FC for a Nonspeaking 3 Year Old in a Community College's Preschool Program: What Are We Learning" at a poster session. Honors undergraduate assistant Tamara Helsom will present "(Spanish Home + English School) x FC = ?" at a poster session.
Sharkey, Venkatram, Strunk, and Billmaier will be presenting on May 8 in Dearborn at the First Michigan Facilitated Communication Conference, whose program is coordinated by McClennen. The Autism Society of MI and WSU are co-sponsors.
BRIEFING ON WORK OF NATIONAL BOARD FOR PROFESSIONAL TEACHING STANDARDS SLATED FOR JUNE 29
Mary Dean Barringer, Director of the Field Test Network of the National Board for Professional
Teaching Standards, will present at noon on June 29.
The session will be held in Boone Hall, in a room to be announced. All interested faculty and staff are invited to attend and to bring a brown-bag lunch. Beverages will be provided.
Barringer will give an overview of the work of the National Board and faculty will have an opportunity to discuss how this work relates to our programs of pre- and in-service professional development.
FACULTY NOTES
Martha Tack recently attended the meeting of the MI Association of School Board Officials and met with the initial class of the leadership academy for the MASBO.
William M. Hetrick is the author of the chapter on "Community Education In Educational Reform" in Educational Restructuring and the Community Education Process (Alexandria, VA: National Community Education Association, 1992).
Jerry Robbins presented at the National Education Commission on Time and Learning at the Corporate Education Center last Friday. Other presenters were Judith Lanier of the Michigan Partnership for New Education and Dennis Sparks of the National Staff Development Council. The presenters also spent considerable time in discussion and question-and-answer with the Commissioners. The hearing was broadcast by WEMU.
Helen Ditzhazy was recently elected president of the MI Association of Professors of Educational Administration.
Rosella Bannister is scheduled to speak on May 6 in Denver to introduce the teaching guide "Consumer Approach to Investing" in a workshop sponsored by the Community College of Denver and the Denver-area district attorney's office.
Jennifer Beller has been instrumental in the development of a series of four video tapes (the first of which is completed) on implementing a moral education program for athletes in NCAA member schools.
Jerry Robbins will be attending a meeting of the Renaissance Group at Towson State this week, along with Provost Ronald Collins and President William Shelton.
OPPORTUNITIES
The National Institute of Justice seeks proposals on a variety of topics: school-based crime prevention, drug treatment programs, consequences of child victimization, gangs, etc. Deadlines vary by program, but many fall in early June. Contact Michelle Barnes in ORD for additional information.
The Lotte Kaliski Foundation for Gifted Children offers grants to schools, colleges, and universities earmarked for children/youth and young adults ages 5-25, who are learning disabled/dyslexic and/or physically handicapped, are talented or gifted in one or more areas, and meet other criteria. Contact Michelle Barnes in ORD for additional information.
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration has announced grant competitions for substance abuse treatment (including adolescents and minorities), addiction training, linkage among agencies, special initiatives
(e.g., special populations), child and adolescent statewide family information networks, and high-risk youth. Deadline dates have not yet been announced. Contact Barbara Richardson in ORD for additional information.
AERA has called for applications for the Senior Fellows Program, the Research Fellows Program, the Research Grants Program, and the Evaluation and Dissemination Internship Program. See the March 1993 Educational Researcher (pp. 42-43) for additional information.
AERA has called for nominations (by November 5) for the Outstanding Book Award, the Outstanding Contributions Relating Research to Practice, and the Raymond B. Cattell Early Career Award for Programmatic Research. See the April 1993 Educational Researcher (p. 26) for additional information.
The May 6 meeting of the Michigan Association of Colleges for Teacher Education will be held 8:30-3:00 p.m. in the University Club at Michigan State University. The topic is "Redefining Educator Preparation for a Changing World of Teaching and Learning." All EMU faculty are eligible to attend.

AACTE PROGRAM PROPOSALS DUE JUNE 1
The American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education meets in Chicago on February 16-19, 1994.
Program proposals are due June 1.
Extraordinary attempts to provide support for attendance will be made for at least one person representing each program proposal that is accepted. (Ideas currently being considered include a chartered bus, a chartered car on Amtrak, etc.) EMU is an institutional member of AACTE, which means that any EMU faculty member is eligible to submit and to attend.
A copy of the "Call for Proposals" is being sent to each COE faculty member, with a strong request that one or more program proposals be submitted.
Program strands are "creating a commitment to high-quality continuing professional development," "developing standards for teaching and learning," "changing education programs to meet new standards," "using assessment for individual learning," and "relying on assessment for accountability."
