COE COUNCIL MEETING OF MAY 12

The COE Council met on May 12.  The following courses were referred to the COE Instruction Committee for "workup" and report:  ECO 527 Women and the Economy in Comparative Perspective (3); G&C 652 The Counselor as Consultant (2); IDT 435 Aviation Cabin Safety (2); and PSY 670 Scientific and Professional Ethics (2).  An additional referral to the committee was the proposed cytogenetics track with Henry Ford Hospital.

Brief reports were received from several affiliated groups.  It was reported that the quorum for UCTE has been reduced from 14 to 11, with approval of the Provost.

Taken from the table was a motion to approve a "curriculum resource consultant approval" program.  The motion was amended to change EDM 591 to EDM 552 in the proposal.  The motion as amended was passed.

The Council dealt with the COE student representative to the Graduate Council by electing whoever is named by the Department of Teacher Education for this purpose.

The COE Council adopted input to the EMU Basic Studies Committee to the effect that the Council considers an assessment of the totality of basic studies through assessment of reading, writing, and computational skills to be inadequate; however, should that be the determination, it is recommended that prospective teachers be exempted from such assessment, on the grounds that they are being evaluated on these aspects through mandatory state testing.

IN THE PRESS

In a capsule summary of EMU in the May 16 issue of the Detroit Free Press, it was stated that "more than half of EMU students commute; most are from southeastern Michigan and Ohio and many are adult or part-time students; particularly known for its College of Education." [emphasis added]

INAUGURAL MICHIGAN ONE-ROOM SCHOOLHOUSE CONFERENCE ATTRACTS 175 FROM THROUGHOUT THE STATE

About 175 people from throughout the state attended the May 14 Inaugural One-Room Schoolhouse Conference held at EMU and sponsored by the COE and the Michigan Historical Society.

Thomas Gwaltney gave multiple lectures on and tours of the Town Hall School.  Donna Schmitt chaired a panel on "the pros and cons of teaching in the one-room school today."  Rochelle Balkam and Lois Porter, both with close EMU connections, were also involved with the program.  A state-wide organization for those interested in one-room schoolhouses was created.
