FACULTY REPRESENTATIVES INVITED TO MIDDLE GRADES CONFERENCE

The California Department of Education has invited EMU representatives to an expense-paid conference (except for transportation) in East Lansing on June 28-30.

Those present will discuss the California Model of Middle Grade Reform.  Registration deadline is June 10.

James Riley is coordinating EMU participation.  Those interested should contact him for registration materials and other information.

"GROW YOUR OWN" INTEREST EXPANDS

On April 15 a session was held involving representatives of EMU's Career Services, Marketing and Student Affairs, and College of Education, along with personnel responsible for recruiting/hiring new teachers at the K-12 level.  The K-12 representatives were from a variety of districts in a number of states, especially in the Sunbelt.

Discussed was the general idea of out-of-state districts (a) identifying able minority students, (b) providing them with some financial assistance to attend EMU to become a teacher, and (c) expecting them to return to the sponsoring district to teach for a certain time.  In many instances, EMU could and would provide financial assistance as well.

Interest in the idea has continued.  Robbie Johnson and representatives of Marketing and Student Affairs are in Florida this week meeting with K-12 officials to move the concept along.

GOVERNOR'S MANAGEMENT INTERN PROGRAM OF INTEREST TO COE GRADUATE STUDENTS

Gov. Engler recently announced the inauguration of the "Governor's Management Intern Program," to begin August 2, 1993.  About 35 interns will be selected to work with a variety of state agencies.  The state agencies involved are expected to include those of interest to COE graduate students--Departments of Education, Mental Health, Social Services, Natural Resources, etc.

An applicant must have received a graduate degree within the 18 months including and prior to August 1993, submit an application form, and provide transcripts and recommendations.  Each intern will receive $25,000 for 1993-94 and a full benefits package.  Internships are for up to two years, with a higher salary in the second year.

Interns will be assigned supervised substantive duties within the state agency and have opportunities for additional learning experiences.

Information materials and application forms are in each COE department office and may be photocopied for use in making a submission.  Application deadline is July 16.

Additional information may be obtained from Anne Mervenne in the Governor's office (517-335-7865) or from Peggy Price in the Civil Service Office (517-335-0300).

NICE RECEIVES FUNDING AWARDS

The National Institute for Consumer Education (NICE) has received two awards recently.  The first, for $10,675, was made by the MI Association of Insurance Companies for the purpose of providing seminars for high school teachers and curriculum developers on the topic of insurance concepts in the secondary curriculum.

The second, for $15,000, was made by the American Express Company to fund regional teacher education seminars and a clearinghouse for consumer education materials.  Rosella Bannister is the project director for both activities.

EMU, MICHIGAN PARTNERSHIP, AND PEW

The COE expects to receive a subcontract from the MI Partnership for New Education to explore during this summer (a) the major teacher education reform proposals and (b) interest in joining other state institutions in preparing a "teacher education reform" proposal to be submitted to the Pew Charitable Trusts in September.

A planning/briefing session has been scheduled for June 23, with Judith Lanier as the guest speaker and facilitator.

COE, YALE CHILD STUDY, AND SKILMAN

COE representatives have been invited to meet with representatives of the Skilman Foundation on June 23 to discuss possible funding of (by the Skilman Foundation) and assistance with implementation of (in Detroit Schools) the Yale Child Study (Comer) model of parent involvement.

UCTE CANCELS MEETINGS UNTIL FALL

The University Council on Teacher Education has canceled its previously-scheduled meetings for the remainder of this year.  The COE Council recently took a similar action.
